Sam Raimi’s new movie, Send Help, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, is a thrilling ride for horror fans. The film follows a worker who’s pushed around by her terrible boss. When they both get shipwrecked on a deserted island, the tables turn – she’s surprisingly good at surviving, which throws their relationship into chaos. As power shifts, tensions rise, leading to madness and ultimately, murder.
During a recent interview with writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift while covering the promotion of Send Help, ComicBook learned that Sam Raimi is planning another horror movie. They confirmed Raimi intends to remake a popular, but lesser-known, horror film from the 1970s.
Send Help Writers Working With Sam Raimi On A Magic (1978) Remake

As a film buff, I’ve always been fascinated by Magic (1978). It’s a really unique psychological horror film directed by Richard Attenborough, and the script is by William Goldman – the guy who wrote The Princess Bride and Butch Cassidy! It stars Anthony Hopkins as Corky, a pretty miserable, alcoholic magician’s assistant who’s struggling to make it on his own. He gets stuck with a ventriloquist’s dummy named Fats, hoping it’ll boost his act. He gets good at ventriloquism, or at least, that’s what we think. The really creepy part is that Fats starts to feel…alive, and he starts plotting to take control, becoming the one calling the shots and speaking his mind. It’s a truly unsettling and clever movie!
Damian Shannon and Mark Swift are keeping the details of their Magic remake under wraps, but Mark Swift explained they’re aiming to honor the spirit of the original writer, William Goldman, while still offering something new. They believe fans of the first movie will enjoy the direction they’re taking. Unlike their film Send Help, this remake will focus on traditional scares and horror elements, and they’re very enthusiastic about the project.
Sam Raimi seems like an ideal director for a remake of Magic. His movies are known for blending suspense, horror, dark humor, and unexpected scares – a combination that would work really well for this story. Raimi also enjoys creating quirky characters, as seen in films like Evil Dead, Spider-Man, and Send Help. The premise of a strange magician struggling with a mischievous, possibly sentient dummy is likely enough to interest him, and the potential for murder and chaos would just be a welcome addition.
Damian Shannon recently shared that he and Kyle Swift have finished a new draft of the Magic remake script and submitted it to Sam Raimi. He described the new version as a more updated take on the original, with significant changes. While remaining tight-lipped about specifics, Shannon expressed excitement about Raimi’s feedback, saying they are confident in the script. He also hinted that, while it might not be as overtly comedic as their previous film Send Help, it will feature some disturbingly intense scenes.
The horror film Send Help is now playing in theaters. There’s currently no news about when the Magic remake might be released. Join the discussion about all things horror on the ComicBook Forum.
