The Exorcist Reboot Adds Another Oscar-Nominated MCU Star to Its Cast (And Fans Will Love It)

Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are actively developing a new Exorcist franchise, starting with a reboot directed by Mike Flanagan. The film has already attracted impressive actors, including Scarlett Johansson, and now adds another well-known performer – an Oscar nominee from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – to its cast.

Okay, folks, some exciting casting news just hit my desk. Laurence Fishburne, a true acting legend with an Oscar nod and a Tony under his belt, is joining the upcoming Exorcist reboot! That’s fantastic news for horror fans, and it’s interesting to see yet another Marvel Cinematic Universe alum joining the cast. We already knew Scarlett Johansson and Chiwetel Ejiofor were on board, and now Fishburne adds his considerable talent to the mix, alongside rising star Jacobi Jupe and the always-reliable Diane Lane. Now, Fishburne’s no stranger to the MCU – he played Bill Foster in Ant-Man and the Wasp – and he’s even hinted he’d love to take on the role of Charles Xavier someday, so it seems like he’s really enjoying hopping between big franchises. This Exorcist reboot is quickly becoming a project to watch!

What We Know About The Exorcist Reboot So Far

Details about the new Exorcist movie are still limited, but we know it will be a completely fresh story. The previous film, The Exorcist: Believer, attempted to link to the original, but didn’t quite connect with audiences or critics, despite doing well in theaters. This new project won’t be a prequel or sequel to the classic film; it’s a standalone story.

We don’t yet know what roles Scarlett Johansson and Laurence Fishburne will play, but Chiwetel Ejiofor is confirmed to be playing a former convict who becomes a priest. We’re hoping to learn more about the other actors’ roles soon. With such a talented cast—including several Oscar contenders—this reboot is sure to be full of great performances.

Mike Flanagan is directing and writing the project through his production company, Red Room Pictures. Alexandra Magistro will oversee the project as an executive producer for Red Room, while David Robinson from Morgan Creek will produce it with Jason Blum and Ryan Turek. Turek will also serve as an executive producer through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.

Following the cancellation of the planned third Exorcist movie due to disappointing reviews of The Exorcist: Believer, a lot of excitement is building around director Mike Flanagan’s upcoming film. Flanagan is a big fan of The Exorcist, and his fresh approach could revitalize the franchise and bring it a new wave of success, becoming a new chapter for this classic horror film.

The Exorcist hits theaters on March 12, 2027.
