It’s widely known that the Channel Islands were occupied by Germany during World War II, from 1940 to 1945. However, many people don’t realize that over 7,000 prisoners were held there in camps where they were forced to work. A new documentary, ‘Ghosts of Alderney: Hitler’s Island Slaves,’ reveals an even more disturbing truth: prison guards sometimes casually shot prisoners for entertainment.
Artist Piers Secunda’s five-year investigation has uncovered disturbing details about atrocities committed at the Sylt camp on the island of Alderney. Nazi SS guard Otto Hogelow encouraged fellow guards to use prisoners as target practice, offering rewards like cigarettes, extra food, and longer leave. While most similar camps saw deaths around 400, the number at Sylt reached 1134, a figure so high it alarmed Nazi officials in Germany.
This story came to light thanks to Giorgi Zbovorski, a Ukrainian prisoner who shared his experiences with his daughters before his death in 2006. Director Secunda deserves credit for uncovering this shocking account, especially considering that none of the guards ever faced justice. Despite the atrocities committed, neither the UK government nor the USSR pursued any criminal charges against them.
Ghosts of Alderney sheds light on a little-known and disturbing story that took place right here in Britain. While the way the story is presented can be a bit complicated, it’s a powerful account, particularly highlighting the successive British governments’ failure to secure justice for the victims of murder.
