The Winter anime season of 2026 is looking great, with highly anticipated sequels like Jujutsu Kaisen, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Hell’s Paradise, and Fire Force leading the way. While those sequels are getting a lot of buzz, Netflix has also released a strong lineup of original anime films and series, available only on their platform. The film Cosmic Princess Kaguya and the series Love Through a Prism from WIT Studio have been particularly well-received by fans and critics. Netflix has been increasingly involved in anime production as the industry grows rapidly, adding new shows and even bringing back older favorites almost every month.
It’s a real bummer, but even though Netflix adds tons of new shows and movies every year, they also take some away – even their own originals! Usually, it comes down to not enough people watching or problems with licensing agreements. Sometimes things do come back, but sadly, that’s not always the case. Recently, the website What’s on Netflix shared a list of titles leaving in March 2026, and I was shocked to see that one of my all-time favorite anime films, 5 Centimeters per Second, is on it! It joined the Netflix anime collection back in September 2024, but it’ll be gone on March 2nd, 2026. I’m definitely going to re-watch it before then!
Netflix Is Officially Removing 5 Centimeters per Second in March 2026

Released in 2007, 5 Centimeters per Second is an early film by Makoto Shinkai and remains highly regarded almost twenty years later. Shinkai is a famous anime director known for popular movies like Your Name and Weathering With You. Its removal from Netflix, along with its unavailability on Crunchyroll, is a significant loss for fans.
Originally released as a film in 2007, its popularity led to adaptations in manga, novels, and live-action. The critically acclaimed movie is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different time in the main character’s life and his connections with the women around him. The story is a bittersweet look at relationships in the early 1990s, where some people fall in love but aren’t destined to stay together. It centers on Takaki Tōno and Akari Shinohara, childhood friends who are separated by life’s circumstances but vow to remain friends.
Even as time and distance pull them apart, they’re unable to move on from their shared past and create new memories. They continue living their ordinary lives, hoping to reunite, but this hope causes them pain as it becomes increasingly clear a future together is unlikely. While the film 5 Centimeters per Second will be removed from Netflix next month, you can still rent it on Prime Video and Apple TV. It’s currently unknown if it will be available on Netflix again.
