Enola Holmes 3 writer explains how new film tackling colonial history is different from the first two

While fans are eager for a possible reunion between Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne on a new project after ‘Adolescence’, they won’t have to wait long to see another collaboration from the talented team behind the popular show.

I’m really excited for Enola Holmes 3! The writer, Jack Thorne, is back – he wrote the first two movies, which I loved – and this time, Philip Barantini, who directed ‘Adolescence,’ is directing. It’s a great team coming together!

The upcoming film, set to release later this year, will follow Millie Bobby Brown’s character, Enola, as she journeys to Malta. There, she’ll encounter a complex and dangerous case where her personal life and work unexpectedly intersect.

Thorne recently shared some additional information about what fans can anticipate, during an exclusive interview for our video series, The TopMob Writers’ Room, where we explore the minds of screenwriters.

I was so curious about how the new film would be different, and Thorne explained it’s because they have a new director this time! He’d worked with Harry Bradbeer on the first two, and really enjoyed that collaboration. But Harry decided to move on, so they brought in Phil Barantini, who I already knew from his amazing work on things like ‘Adolescence’ and ‘Boiling Point’. I’m really excited to see what Phil brings to this one!

Working with different partners, like Harry and now Phil, always brings new and unique aspects to the collaboration.

Millie has matured a lot, and now she’s a mother. She’s become a very different person from the one I originally envisioned when I first started thinking about Enola Holmes. So, the goal was to portray what Enola Holmes looks like as an adult, specifically through my creative vision.

Thorne hinted at the storyline, explaining he wanted to revisit Enola Holmes with a fresh approach, exploring a lesser-seen side of 19th-century Britain. He’s always viewed the Enola Holmes stories as a unique lens for understanding that era’s society.

Each of the three films focuses on a different part of our history: the first explores changes to land and voting rights, the second details the rise of labor unions, and the third examines our colonial past. I’m really excited to bring all these elements together, while also maintaining the style of director Phil Barantini and tailoring the writing to Millie’s strengths.

Before the next Enola Holmes movie arrives, Millie Bobby Brown fans can check out her new series, Lord of the Flies. This four-part adaptation of the classic William Golding novel will be available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer starting February 8th.

During a conversation for The TopMob Writers’ Room, Thorne discussed his work on shows like His Dark Materials, This Is England, and Adolescence. He also offered a few hints about the upcoming Beatles films.
