As a big fan of Souls-like games, I’ve come to really appreciate emotes – they’re just such a fun way to connect with other players and even the characters in the game. And it’s awesome that Nioh 3 is including them too! It really adds to the experience.
In the Nioh games, the animations players use to express themselves—called Gestures—aren’t just for show. They’re actually effective against two kinds of enemies, Mujina and Nurikabe.
Don’t expect assistance with tough bosses like Yamagata Masakage; you’ll have to rely on your own skill, such as parrying, to defeat them.
Here’s a quick guide to using emotes in Nioh 3, including how they interact with the Mujina and Nurikabe characters.
How to emote in Nioh 3: Gestures explained

To emote in Nioh 3, you need to press R1/RB and the Start button on your controller.
This action will display a menu of available gestures on your screen.
You’ll begin the game with a limited set of Gestures, but you can learn more as you play and advance.
You’ll find some of these new moves helpful when facing Mujina and Nurikabe, as explained below.
How to use emotes on Mujina and Nurikabe explained
Players of previous Nioh titles may remember Mujina and Nurikabe.
Mujina are supernatural creatures that disguise themselves by hiding in treasure chests. They’ll suddenly appear and transform to look like you, then make a particular hand signal.
If you want to avoid fighting a Mujina, simply wait for it to make a gesture, and then copy that same gesture.
Succeed in this task, and the Mujina will disappear, leaving behind all its treasures. But if you fail, you’ll be forced to battle a perfect duplicate of yourself.

Nurikabe are mythical creatures from Japanese folklore that appear as walls. You can identify them by a pair of glowing eyes, and they usually block the way to hidden places with hot springs or valuable treasure.
Once you locate it, stand facing the object and use an emote that’s either blue, yellow, or red.
If you make the correct colored gesture, the Nurikabe will allow you to continue. You have two chances to guess the right color, but if you fail both times, you’ll be forced to battle it.
There’s no way to determine the correct color, so you’ll have to make your best guess and hope for the best.
