Baldur’s Gate TV series in the works from The Last of Us showrunner – with one major twist

The popular 2023 video game Baldur’s Gate 3, based on the Dungeons & Dragons universe, is getting a TV adaptation – and there’s a surprising development!

According to Deadline, Craig Mazin – currently working on the final season of HBO’s The Last of Us – will be adapting the video game Baldur’s Gate 3 into a TV series for the network. Essentially, he’s moving from one big HBO project to another.

Neil Mazin said he’s thrilled to continue the story of Baldur’s Gate 3, a game he’s spent almost 1,000 hours playing, created by Larian and Wizards of the Coast.

He shared his enthusiasm for Dungeons & Dragons, praising game director Swen Vincke and his team for their excellent adaptation of the game.

As expected, a well-known television producer who recently had success adapting a video game is now planning to turn another favorite game into a TV show.

Okay, so I was expecting a direct retelling of Baldur’s Gate 3, but it’s actually kinda cool – the TV show takes place after the game’s story. It’s not an adaptation, it’s more like a sequel, which is a pretty big twist!

According to Deadline, the upcoming Baldur’s Gate TV series will continue the story from the games, picking up right after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3. It will follow both familiar and new characters as they deal with the consequences of what happened in the latest game.

Fans will be thrilled to hear about returning characters, especially since the actors who played them in Baldur’s Gate 3 – like Neil Newbon (Astarion), Devora Wilde (Lae’zel), Jennifer English (Shadowheart), and Samantha Béart (Karlach) – have become incredibly popular with the community since the game came out.

Okay, so I’m really curious how they’re going to pull off this blend of familiar and fresh faces. From what I’ve read, it sounds like the show is going to stick with the classic Dungeons & Dragons formula: starting with a group of relatively normal characters and watching them grow in power as they go on adventures. It’s cool they’re staying true to that core idea!

One thing I’m really hoping for with the Baldur’s Gate 3 show is that they get the original voice actors involved! I saw that Craig Mazin is planning to reach out to them and see if they can be in the show somehow, which would be amazing. Fingers crossed they can make it happen!

Many fans, including us, are hoping to see Newbon cast as Astarion in a potential live-action adaptation, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that it happens!

So, everyone’s buzzing about a Baldur’s Gate 3 TV show, which is probably a ways off, but I’ll definitely share any news I hear about it as soon as I do!
