After the success of the film Superman, James Gunn’s fresh start for the DC Universe is off to a strong beginning, with plans for 2025. Excitingly, someone who frequently worked with director Zack Snyder will be returning for the next movie.
According to ComicBookMovie.com, Tom Holkenborg, also known as Junkie XL, will be the new composer for the Supergirl movie. He’s taking over from Ramin Djawadi, known for his work on Game of Thrones. Holkenborg has a strong background in blockbuster films, having composed music for movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Army of the Dead, Rebel Moon, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Deadpool, and Godzilla vs. Kong.
Some fans might be surprised to learn that a frequent collaborator of Zack Snyder is joining the new DC Universe, especially since James Gunn intends to reboot the franchise. However, this return suggests that the DCU won’t completely abandon what worked well in the previous DC Extended Universe, even as it moves forward with a fresh, optimistic vision.
As a huge movie fan, I always loved the epic scores Junkie XL did for Zack Snyder’s films and the DC Universe. He really brought a unique energy to those movies! Now, he’s tackling Supergirl, and I’m expecting something totally different from what Ramin Djawadi did. Luckily, we don’t have too long to wait and see how the music fits the film – Supergirl is currently slated to come out on June 26, 2026.
Even though the DCU represents a new beginning for DC Studios, bringing back Junkie XL isn’t the first time James Gunn has revisited past collaborators. Recently, Christina Hodson, who wrote both 2020’s Birds of Prey and the unfinished Batgirl movie, was reported to be involved with the first Batman film in the DCU.
James Gunn has indicated he’s open to bringing back actors from the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) for the new DC Universe (DCU). A prime example of this is Jason Momoa, who will play a different DC character – a beloved alien mercenary and bounty hunter – after playing Aquaman in the DCEU from 2016 to 2023. The film Supergirl will also feature music by Junkie XL.
Supergirl Has the Potential to Be Even Bigger Than Superman
With Supergirl set to release in June, the movie faces high expectations. As the second film in the DCU, it will inevitably be compared to Superman, which came out in 2025. James Gunn both directed and wrote Superman, while Supergirl is directed by Marc Webb (Cruella) and written by Ana Noguiera (The Vampire Diaries).
The film features a strong supporting cast including Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa. The story centers around the main character celebrating her 23rd birthday, journeying through space with her dog, Krypto, and discovering a devastating event that leads her on a quest for revenge. It’s yet to be seen if it will match Superman‘s $616 million box office success, but with the DC Universe rebuilding and bringing back familiar faces from the previous DC Extended Universe, the future looks promising.
Supergirl will make its theatrical debut on June 26, 2026.
