The upcoming Nioh 3 is taking inspiration from other popular games, especially Lies of P, when it comes to boss battles and combat. Director Masaki Fujita recently told PCGamer that Lies of P heavily influenced the design of these elements. Team Ninja also learned from other titles: Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty showed them the importance of rewarding loot alongside complex combat, while Rise of the Ronin informed their approach to open-world environments.
Beyond Team Ninja’s own titles, Lies of P was a significant influence, particularly in how its bosses effectively used precise timing for blocking and dodging. The boss designs and animations—often incorporating unique elements—were a major source of inspiration, according to the developer.
Fujita shared that he enjoyed the challenging and well-executed combat in Lies of P, especially the boss battles. He was particularly impressed by the creative designs of the bosses and how their attacks reflected those designs. This provided valuable inspiration for creating the enemy actions in Nioh.
I finally got my hands on Nioh 3 on PC and PS5, and wow, it’s really good! I gave it a 9 out of 10 in my review because the combat is just incredible and I’m really enjoying how you level up and progress. It’s also cool to see how Team Ninja built on what they did in their earlier games – they really nailed it!
If you’re unsure about buying Nioh 3 right away, a demo is available on PC and PS5. It’s been very popular – Team Ninja announced it’s already been downloaded over a million times! Plus, you can even continue your progress from the demo when you purchase the full game.
Nioh 3 follows Tokugawa Takechiyo, who was destined to become the next shogun and usher in a peaceful era after a hundred years of war. But his brother, Kunimatsu, desires the shogunate for himself. Consumed by jealousy, he amasses an army of supernatural creatures to attack the capital and claim the title.
Now, Takechiyo must journey through different worlds and time periods with his guardian spirit, Kusanagi, to defeat Kunimatsu and stop his rule.
Currently, Nioh 3 is available on PC and PlayStation 5, but Xbox Series X/S players won’t have to wait much longer. A recent trailer revealed the game will be a PlayStation exclusive for just six months. While an Xbox release won’t happen immediately after that period ends in June, the developers are probably already working on bringing it to Xbox.
