32 Years Ago, We Lost One of the Most Influential Creators in Comics

Today, comic books are everywhere, but they weren’t always so popular. Their origins lie in the combined work and dedication of countless people over many years. While it’s impossible to name everyone who helped create the comic book industry, certain figures stand out as particularly influential. People like Gardner Fox, Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Steve Ditko, Chris Claremont, Jerry Siegel, and Joe Shuster were all instrumental in transforming comics into the powerful medium we know today.

Among the many brilliant comic book artists, Jack Kirby is widely considered the greatest. He was incredibly productive and had a huge impact on the industry, fundamentally shaping the worlds of both DC and Marvel. There was only one Jack Kirby, and today marks the 32nd anniversary of his passing. Let’s celebrate his lasting legacy by revisiting some of his most iconic creations.

The Ever-Lovin’ Comic Book King

Jack Kirby quickly became a comic book artist after the popularity of Superman. He started with smaller publications like Wild Boy Magazine and Lightnin’ and the Lone Rider, but his career really took off when he began working with Joe Simon. Together, they created the hugely successful Captain America. They then moved to National Comics Publications (DC’s predecessor) and reimagined the Sandman character, also creating Manhunter. After serving in World War II, Kirby and Simon returned and revolutionized the comics world again by launching the romance genre with Young Romance, a genre that remains popular today.

Jack Kirby truly made his mark when he returned to Marvel Comics. He co-created the Fantastic Four, which completely changed the world of comic books with its blend of sci-fi, superhero action, and relatable family dynamics – a style that became central to Marvel. He also played a key role in creating iconic characters like the Hulk, Thor, the X-Men, and Black Panther, all of whom remain hugely popular today. Kirby was particularly important in developing the cosmic side of Marvel, introducing characters like Galactus, Uatu the Watcher, and the Silver Surfer, who helped define the universe beyond Earth.

After returning to DC Comics, Jack Kirby revitalized their universe with a new cosmic mythology. He created the “Fourth World,” introducing characters like the New Gods and the formidable Darkseid, along with their supporting cast. Though the series wasn’t an immediate commercial success, these characters became foundational to DC’s identity. Darkseid, in particular, has become a defining villain for DC and remains one of the most iconic and influential characters in comic book history. Kirby’s contributions extend far beyond just these essential characters; he left a lasting impact on the entire medium.

The Man Who Could Imagine Everything

Jack Kirby was a truly groundbreaking creator, not only designing some of the most famous characters in comics, but also fundamentally changing the industry. His distinctive and high-quality artwork essentially defined the look of Marvel comics. Beyond that, his focus on relatable, human characters became a hallmark of Marvel during that period. Kirby was a constant innovator, always striving to push the boundaries of what comic books could be. He was the go-to artist when a project needed a special touch, as his style continuously developed while remaining instantly recognizable and classic.

Long before trade paperbacks were common, Jack Kirby envisioned collecting his Fourth World series in that format. He was driven by a desire to capture the wonder he found in the world, weaving together mythology, science fiction, and a fascination with youth culture to create stories that resonated with everyone. Kirby believed comics should be for all readers and always remembered the initial spark of inspiration that made his work so timeless. He relentlessly pursued new ideas throughout his life, and his creative spirit deserves to be celebrated and imitated. If we could all see the world through Jack Kirby’s eyes, it would be a truly amazing place. Thank you, Jack Kirby, from all of us who love your comics.
