James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow Gets Massive Production Update From Lex Luthor Star

James Gunn expected a less bumpy transition when he left Marvel Studios to become co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran. Fortunately, both the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film (scheduled for 2026) and Superman: Man of Tomorrow (planned for 2027) are still moving forward as expected.

While the second movie hasn’t started filming yet, preparations are underway. A recent social media post featuring Nicholas Hoult – the acclaimed actor who is currently training – strongly suggests he’ll be involved in the sequel to David Corenswet’s first appearance as Kal-El in 2025.

The actors are being trained by renowned fitness expert Paolo Mascitti, who also worked with David Corenswet, Edi Gathegi, and Maria Gabriela De Faria to get them in peak physical condition for James Gunn’s film.

Evan Hoult will be returning as Lex Luthor in the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow sequel, after delivering a memorable performance that almost overshadowed the first film last year.

James Gunn has demonstrated his dedication to Lex Luthor by including the character in multiple DC Universe stories. Most recently, Luthor appeared in what is believed to be the final season of Peacemaker, where Rick Flag Sr. enlisted his help to build a metahuman prison in another universe. This storyline lays the groundwork for the upcoming Superman movie and also introduces the live-action version of Braniac, played by Lars Eidinger.

Nicholas Hoult Is Ready for Superman: Man of Tomorrow

Nicholas Hoult has had a lot of success as an actor, recently appearing in films like Nosferatu, The Garfield Movie, and Reinfeld, before potentially joining the Superman universe. However, his work with director James Gunn has been particularly impactful, laying a strong foundation for the new DC Universe and earning praise from both critics and fans. He’s now so strongly associated with the role of Lex Luthor that it’s hard to picture anyone else playing the character.

Honestly, Nicholas Hoult’s take on this supervillain is the best I’ve seen since Gene Hackman absolutely nailed it against Christopher Reeve over 45 years ago. There have been a few actors who’ve tried since then, but when you compare them to Hoult – and really, to Hackman – it’s just not a fair fight. Hoult really captured something special.

It’s encouraging to see progress with Superman: Man of Tomorrow and other films like Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II (2027). However, the same can’t be said for certain about James Gunn’s Batman: Knightfall, the evolving plans for Blue Beetle, and the ongoing casting process for a new Wonder Woman movie.

It’s hard to say how involved Netflix will ultimately be with the DC Universe, despite any current assurances, but the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran definitely gives the cast of Superman: Man of Tomorrow, including actors like Jacob Elordi and David Corenswet, a lot to work with.

Superman (2025) is currently streaming on HBO Max.
