91-Rated Nintendo Switch Console Exclusive Game Is a 500-Hour Sci-Fi Masterpiece

Okay, so I just found out about this incredible sci-fi game that originally came out on PC, and honestly, I feel like I missed out! It was a smaller indie title and dropped right near the end of the year, so it kinda flew under the radar. But get this – it scored a 91 on Metacritic, putting it among the best games of 2024! Now, it’s hitting the Nintendo Switch… and only the Switch. It’s a Switch exclusive, which is awesome for us Switch players, even if the console is getting a little older now.

On February 16th, players with a Nintendo Switch – and those with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, thanks to compatibility – will finally be able to experience Caves of Qud. This sci-fi roguelike game first launched in early access in 2015 and will have its full release at the end of 2024, but for science fiction enthusiasts, it’s been a long wait that will be well worth it.

One of the Best Sci-Fi Roguelikes

I recently discovered Caves of Qud, and it’s unlike anything I’ve ever played! It’s a sci-fi fantasy roguelike with this amazing retro vibe, and the world feels incredibly detailed and alive – seriously, even the plants seem to have their own thoughts! You basically wander through the ruins of ancient civilizations, trying to figure out if the world is just fading away or if something new is about to emerge. It’s a really immersive experience.

You know how sometimes critics absolutely love a small indie game, but regular players just don’t get the hype? Well, that’s not happening with Caves of Qud! It’s seriously impressive – after over 10,000 reviews on Steam, it still has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating, which is the best you can get. That’s because a huge 95% of players actually recommend it, and that really speaks for itself.

500 Hours for $30

Like many games of its type, Caves of Qud can be finished relatively quickly, but truly completing it takes a very long time. A quick playthrough requires around 40 hours, while a full completion averages around 500. Considering it costs just $30, Caves of Qud offers exceptional value for your money. Are people actually spending 500 hours with it? Looking at Steam reviews, the most dedicated players have logged over 200 hours – one has 224, another 195, and a third 259. While not quite 500 hours, that’s still a huge amount of playtime and incredible value for the price.

While most expect the Nintendo Switch version to cost the same as the Steam version, Freehold Games and Kitfox Games haven’t officially confirmed the price yet.
