Although Ubisoft hasn’t officially announced anything, there’s been talk that they’re planning a return for the Rayman series to mark its 30th anniversary. This speculation has been strengthened by Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman, who recently mentioned that a remake of the original game is in development. In an interview with Retro Gamer magazine, Ancel expressed his fondness for the first Rayman and highlighted how well it still plays today.
According to Michel Ancel, Rayman remains an enjoyable game with plenty to offer. He noted that the game’s pace can feel a little slow due to the size of the character, and its demanding, pixel-perfect controls can be challenging. However, he believes these older limitations are what help the game feel fresh and unique even now, as reported by the Rayman Merchandise social media account.
He then talked about the game’s remake, explaining that Ubisoft is updating it with improved graphics and helpful features. These improvements include more frequent save points during levels, making the tougher sections less difficult.
I heard they’re actually planning a remake, which is awesome! It’s a pretty complicated game, so it’s great they’re giving it an HD update. Apparently, Ubisoft is even adding more checkpoints, which I think is a smart move. The original could be really tough if you weren’t experienced, so making it a little more accessible is a good thing. Overall though, it’s still a fantastic game in my opinion.
Just last month, there were hints that the game Rayman might be making a comeback. A listing for Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition appeared on the Australian Classification Board’s website, registered on January 22nd and rated ‘G’ for mild violence, meaning it’s appropriate for all ages. However, as of today, that rating listing has been removed.
The report suggests Ubisoft is working on two new Rayman games. One, codenamed Iceman, is likely a special edition to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Rayman series. The other, called Steambot, is rumored to be a remake of the popular 2013 title, Rayman Legends.
For years, there have been whispers about Ubisoft creating a new main Rayman game, following up on Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc from 2003. But full development is likely to begin only after Ubisoft sees how well the Rayman Legends remake performs.
A remastered or remade collection of the original Rayman trilogy – Rayman, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, and Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc – is in development to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary. The first Rayman game debuted in 1995 on PC, Atari Jaguar, and PlayStation. Rayman 2: The Great Escape followed in 1999, becoming available on Nintendo 64, PlayStation, PS2, Dreamcast, and PC. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc completed the original trilogy in 2003, launching on PC, PS2, Xbox, and GameCube.
Ubisoft has confirmed they are developing future Rayman games, but producer Loic Gounon cautioned fans that any announcements are still a ways off.
Okay, awesome news for Rayman fans like me! Michel Ancel just let it slip in a Retro Gamer interview that the original Rayman is getting an HD rerelease! We’d already seen hints of a ‘Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition’ pop up with ratings boards, but now it’s confirmed! Sorry for the quick repost – I messed up the wording in my previous announcement.
