Steam Early Access Will Now List the Planned Release Date
Steam’s Early Access program has become very popular with both gamers and developers as it expands. Because of this, any changes Steam makes to the program are closely watched. Displaying a planned release date for a game still in development might seem small, but it’s a positive step. It helps players feel confident about what they’re buying, especially since Early Access games cost money even though they aren’t finished. Providing updates, like a potential release date, builds trust between players and the developers.

Steam now lets game developers set an expected release date when they launch a game in Early Access. They can choose a specific date, month/year, quarter/year, or just the year. When a date is set—either for new games or updated listings—an Early Access notice (like the one for ARK: Survival Evolved) will display “Leaving Early Access: DATE” at the bottom. This feature was added based on developer feedback, giving players a clearer idea of when the full game is planned to launch.
This new feature is rolling out now and will gradually appear in games you’ve already bought in Early Access, as well as future purchases. However, it’s up to each developer whether or not they use it. Many developers were already sharing similar information in their game descriptions, so this is essentially a more formal way of doing things. Steam advises developers to only announce specific dates if they’re very sure they can meet them. This update should improve the Early Access experience and encourage more people to try these games.
