
I’m really excited about Exodus! Drew Karpyshyn, who did amazing work on Mass Effect, is leading the story, and he recently talked about how side quests will work. He doesn’t want players feeling like they have to do every little thing just to progress. Instead, he’s aiming for side content that feels meaningful – stuff that actually adds to the story or helps you understand the game’s world better. It sounds like they’re focusing on quality over quantity, which is awesome!
We want side quests to feel like a natural part of the game, not just something added on. It’s important that players choose to do them because they’re genuinely interested, not just to fulfill a requirement or earn experience. Ideally, players should feel motivated to explore these optional stories and activities because they’re engaging and fit within the game’s world and characters. These side stories should connect to the main themes and expand on the more subtle or less-explored aspects of the game.
During the same interview, Karpyshyn discussed Time Dilation, a core feature of the Exodus story. This allows the RPG to cover a story taking place over many years, and guarantees that player decisions have a meaningful and lasting impact on the game.
Karpysyhn explains that time manipulation is central to the game’s narrative, and the team is committed to delivering a satisfying experience for players. He admits, however, that implementing this feature proved difficult at times, leading to moments of doubt about their approach.
As a gamer, I totally agree with what Drew Karpyshyn is saying. It feels like there’s a real hunger for huge, story-driven sci-fi RPGs like Mass Effect, but most studios aren’t really focusing on that. It’s cool to hear that a lot of the people working on Exodus at Archetype Entertainment are fans of the genre themselves, but it also means there’s a lot riding on them to get it right – the pressure must be intense!
As a gamer myself, I totally get it – there’s a real craving for something new and awesome. We, as developers, are fans too, so we know exactly what kind of games we love and what players are waiting for. That creates a huge chance for us to deliver something special, but honestly, it’s a ton of pressure! Everyone’s expectations are really high, and we’re working our tails off to make sure we nail it.
He explained that this was a fantastic chance, but they had to meet very high expectations. He pointed out that creating games is challenging because each new title needs to be better than the amazing games already out there – it always has to push boundaries and be innovative.
The game Exodus is planned for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The developers are currently targeting a 2027 release, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.
