PC gamers looking for new games often check Steam to see what’s popular. Steam has a massive library, and websites like SteamDB help track what players are enjoying. While it usually takes time for new games to gain traction, some titles become instant hits and quickly climb the charts. That’s exactly what’s happening with the recently released tactical RPG, Mewgenics.
Mewgenics is a new strategy RPG developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel, the minds behind The Binding of Isaac and The End is Nigh. After being announced back in 2012, the game finally launched and is proving to be incredibly popular. Within hours of its release on Steam, over 58,900 people were playing it simultaneously. Beyond the strong player numbers, Mewgenics is receiving rave reviews, currently boasting an ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ rating on Steam and a Metacritic score of 89 – making it the highest-rated game released this year so far.
Mewgenics Claims Top Slot on Steam and Metacritic Hours After Launch

Everyone’s talking about a new game on Steam called Mewgenics. It’s a tactical RPG where you breed and train cats to create the perfect team for challenging adventures. After being in development for over a decade, it launched on PC on February 12th. Don’t let the cute cartoon cat art fool you – Mewgenics is a surprisingly complex and difficult game that requires strategic thinking and tough choices to keep your feline fighters in peak condition.
I’m seriously blown away by Mewgenics! The main story alone is huge – we’re talking over 200 hours of gameplay! And the amount of stuff in it is incredible, with tons of different cat classes, items to collect, and enemies to battle. What I really love is that it’s a roguelite, so every playthrough feels fresh and forces you to make tough choices. From what I’ve seen, and what everyone else is saying, it was totally worth the wait – both fans and reviewers seem to be loving it!
Since its release, Mewgenics has received very positive reviews on Steam. Players are quickly falling in love with the game’s funny and unpredictable humor. However, it’s not just jokes – Mewgenics also offers fast-paced, strategic gameplay that will challenge players. One reviewer on Steam summed it up perfectly: “This game is great for people who like cats, poop humor, and deep tactical gameplay.”

Players aren’t the only ones loving Mewgenics – critics are raving about it too! As of today, the indie RPG is number one on Metacritic, boasting an impressive score of 89. That makes it the highest-rated new game of 2026 so far, and it’s quickly become a contender for Game of the Year, potentially surpassing Nioh 3 after only a week. While it’s still early to predict a winner, especially with many more games on the horizon, Mewgenics‘ success is remarkable for a new indie title, both in terms of how players are responding and what critics are saying.
Currently, Mewgenics is only playable on PC and Steam Deck through Steam. However, due to its early popularity, a console version might be released in the future. The game costs $29.99 on Steam, but is 10% off until February 24th.
