Video games offer a wide range of experiences, from the tension of horror to the excitement of adventure. It’s no surprise, then, that relaxing “cozy” games have become so popular. Games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing focus on creating a peaceful atmosphere where players can connect with pleasant characters and enjoy simple, stress-free activities. This genre is incredibly calming, and relies heavily on its charming atmosphere as much as its actual gameplay.
The Poker Night games from Telltale hold a special place for me because they were so laid-back and funny. Playing poker against well-known gaming and internet personalities was a truly enjoyable and relaxing experience. That’s why I’m thrilled to see Poker Night at the Inventory getting remastered for Switch, PlayStation, and PC. But I’m really hoping this is just the first step towards bringing back the even better sequel as well.
Poker Night At The Inventory Was A Delight, But The Sequel Was Better

The recent remaster of Poker Night at the Inventory gives hope that its sequel will also return. Originally released in November 2010, Poker Night at the Inventory was unique because it focused on the characters playing Texas Hold’Em poker. What made it special was the clever writing from Telltale Games, which allowed the game’s crossover stars – Max (from Sam & Max), Heavy (from Team Fortress 2), Strong Bad (from Homestar Runner), and Tycho (from Penny Arcade) – to truly shine. Each character had a distinct personality and comedic timing, making the conversations during the poker games incredibly entertaining. It was a lighthearted, fun game that could even help you get better at poker, all while feeling like a relaxed night with friends. Bringing it to modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 was a great move, but I’m even more eager to see a new version of the sequel.
So, Poker Night 2 dropped in 2013, and honestly, the gameplay was pretty much the same as the first one, but they added Omaha Hold ‘Em which was cool. The characters were all new except for Sam & Max – just Sam showed up this time! The new lineup was awesome: Ash from Evil Dead, Brock Samson from The Venture Bros., and Claptrap from Borderlands. Like the first game, everyone had totally different personalities, but the fact that they came from such different worlds really made each character stand out, visually and in how they acted. The jokes were sharper, the conversations felt more meaningful, and the arguments were just hilarious. Oh, and GLaDOS from Portal dealt the cards! She’d chime in with comments and even started developing her own relationships with everyone at the table – including me, which was pretty neat.
Why Telltale’s Poker Games Worked So Well

At their core, Poker Night at the Inventory and Solitaire aren’t that different. Both are classic card games updated for digital platforms, with straightforward rules that depend on both skill and luck. However, Valve’s version really stands out thanks to its strong focus on style and how it looks. Plus, the opponents in Poker Night develop habits you can learn to exploit. This makes both games incredibly easy to pick up and play for relaxation. That enjoyable atmosphere is key to the experience, giving a familiar game a unique personality – or, more accurately, using the characters to create humor.
I absolutely love both Poker Night at the Inventory and Poker Night 2 – they’re the perfect games to just chill out and hang with friends. The relaxing jazz music and casual conversations really set the mood. I always get a kick out of seeing the Heavy try to pull off a bluff in the original! But Poker Night 2 really took everything to the next level. The character interactions were so clever and funny, and you got a sense that there was a lot more to them than just the poker game. It was a favorite of mine for years, which is why it’s so frustrating it’s not available to buy digitally anymore. Even though some people still have it on Steam, both games deserve more love. I’m thrilled about the remaster of the first game, but honestly, my biggest hope is that it does well enough to convince Valve to make a new Poker Night 2! That would be amazing.
