It appears that, while FromSoftware is deeply engrossed in creating content for “Elden Ring: Nightreign” and the Nintendo Switch 2’s exclusive title “The Duskbloods,” they seem to be simultaneously working on another project as well. As per Mp1st, this third project is said to be at an advanced stage and goes by the code name FMC. This codename is thought to be a short form of a longer one.
The report highlights that FMC is a versatile project, with its development progressing significantly, possibly leading to its release next year. It’s important to mention that unlike The Duskbloods, which will be released exclusively on the Switch 2, FMC spans across multiple platforms.
Based on the naming pattern of earlier FromSoftware projects, titles beginning with ‘F’ have typically been either games from the Dark Souls or Armored Core series. The codename FMC could hint at a revival of one of these series – it may be a new installment in the Dark Souls series, even though Dark Souls 3 and its DLCs seem to have concluded the storyline; or it could be something fresh for Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon.
Despite the fact that Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon was only released recently, it’s typical for this series to have new games appear soon after a main numbered sequel. For instance, following the release of Armored Core 4 in 2006, there was Armored Core: For Answer in 2008. Similarly, after Armored Core 5 in 2012, we had Armored Core: Verdict Day in 2013. Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to expect a similar follow-up for Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon.
Regarding the Dark Souls series, its creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has made it clear in the past that he’s not keen on returning to the franchise. If project FMC isn’t related to Armored Core 6, there’s a chance it could be a polished version or reimagining of either Dark Souls 2 or 3. With Gamescom approaching rapidly, we might be hearing a new announcement from FromSoftware very soon.
In different FromSoftware games, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was known by the codenames NTCG and NTC, Bloodborne by SPRJ, and Elden Ring initially by GR. It’s intriguing that Elden Ring later got the codename CL, which might suggest that Elden Ring: Nightreign could be perceived separately within the broader Elden Ring franchise internally.
During this interval, the development of “Elden Ring: Nightreign” has served as a significant exploration for FromSoftware, as they haven’t before created a multiplayer game from scratch. Prior to its launch, director Junya Ishizaki shared that they are observing player responses to “Nightreign” in order to determine aspects for their upcoming project, “The Duskbloods”. In an interview, Ishizaki stated that “Nightreign” will provide insights into how players perceive this type of game and this new challenge we’ve undertaken.
