Bluepoint Games Closure Comes in Light of “Increasingly Challenging Industry Environment” – Rumor

Following Sony’s announcement that Bluepoint Games will close in March, Hermen Hulst, head of Sony’s studio business, reportedly explained the decision to staff. According to Kotaku, Hulst stated the closure was due to the growing difficulties within the video game industry.

Okay, so the news started with a lot of praise for PlayStation Studios – seriously, games like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Ghost of Yōtei, Helldivers 2, and MLB The Show have been amazing and everyone loves them! But then it shifted to talk about how making games is getting super expensive, the industry isn’t growing as fast as it used to, and how players are behaving differently – all made worse by the tough economy right now.

In an update from PlayStation Studios, Head of Studios Neil Druckmann shared that 2025 was a successful year. Key highlights included the successful launch of Ghost of Yotei, the critically acclaimed Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and continued strong performance from Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show, all of which kept players engaged and generated revenue.

The gaming industry is becoming more difficult to navigate. It’s getting more expensive to make games, the industry isn’t growing as quickly as it used to, players’ preferences are shifting, and the overall economy is creating challenges – all of which make it harder to create games that can succeed long-term.

Financial difficulties caused Sony to close Bluepoint Games. A PlayStation representative had already announced that the studio’s 70 employees were losing their jobs due to the closure.

Things are changing, and as a gamer, I’ve learned you gotta roll with it! We’ve been looking at what’s working and what isn’t to make sure we’re building awesome games now and setting ourselves up for even better ones down the line. That means, unfortunately, Bluepoint Games will be closing its doors in March. It’s tough news, but we’re focused on the bigger picture.

We didn’t make this decision easily. Bluepoint is a remarkably skilled team, and their technical abilities have created fantastic experiences for PlayStation players. I’m grateful to everyone at Bluepoint for their innovation, dedication to their craft, and commitment to high quality. We’ll do our best to find new roles for some of the affected employees within our other studios around the world.

I know this news is difficult, but I’m optimistic about the future. PlayStation Studios will continue to focus on creativity, innovation, and creating amazing experiences for players. We have a strong plan for the next year, with many exciting things coming soon. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

Bluepoint Games has built a strong reputation for beautifully remaking classic games. They were behind the PlayStation 5 launch title, a remake of Demon’s Souls, and previously revitalized the beloved Shadow of the Colossus. More recently, Bluepoint was developing an online game set in the world of God of War. Unfortunately, this project, like several other live-service games at Sony, was cancelled.

When PlayStation canceled the project, they said the game studio, Bluepoint Games, wouldn’t close. However, over the past year, Bluepoint has proposed several new game ideas, but none have been given the go-ahead.
