Pokemon Confirms Gen 1 Games for Nintendo Switch Ahead of Pokemon Presents

As Pokémon Day nears, fans are excited to see what The Pokémon Company has planned. They’ve now officially announced a Pokémon Presents presentation for Friday, February 27th at 9 am Eastern Time. But they couldn’t wait to share all the news! Along with the presentation time, The Pokémon Company has confirmed a long-held rumor: Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen will be available as downloadable games for the Nintendo Switch.

For a long time, there have been rumors that the original Pokémon games (Generation 1) would be available on the Nintendo Switch. Now, those rumors are becoming a reality! The updated versions of these classic games, first released on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, are coming to both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. They’ll be available right after the Pokémon Presents presentation on February 27th. Here’s a breakdown of what’s been announced.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Coming to Nintendo Switch on Pokemon Day

This year marks 30 years since the release of the original Pokemon Red and Pokemon Green, leading many fans to hope for a re-release on the Switch. However, The Pokemon Company has announced they’ll be bringing back the updated 2004 remakes, FireRed and LeafGreen, instead. These versions retell the classic story from the first Pokemon games, but with improved graphics and gameplay. While fans were eager to potentially play them on Switch, the announcement came as a surprise this early in the year.

Following the recent Pokemon Presents presentation, remakes of the original Pokemon games will be available for purchase individually on the Nintendo eShop. To mark the 30th anniversary, The Pokemon Company released a new trailer giving fans their first look at the Nintendo Switch versions of LeafGreen and FireRed. You can watch the trailer below!

You can pre-order both games now on the Nintendo eShop for $19.99 each. They will only be available as digital downloads, with no plans for physical copies outside of Japan.

With remakes of the original Kanto games already confirmed for the Switch, it’s likely The Pokemon Company has even more exciting news to share during the 2026 Pokemon Presents. Basically, this 30th-anniversary livestream is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans.

Pokemon Day 2026 will be celebrated with a livestream on the official Pokemon YouTube and Twitch channels, starting at 9am Eastern Time. According to reliable sources like Serebii.net’s Joe Merrick, the presentation is expected to last around 25 minutes – longer than usual for a Pokemon Presents, hinting at some exciting announcements for fans.

Pokémon Day 2026 is almost here – it also marks 30 years of Pokémon! We now know a new game set in the Kanto region is coming to Nintendo Switch. This has fans excited and wondering what other announcements will be made during the upcoming livestream.
