Playing Sons of Sparta has been really enjoyable. It’s great to see a younger Kratos training with his brother, Deimos – he’s still developing the skills and fierce determination that would eventually make him a legend. However, his early years as a Spartan weren’t easy; he faced plenty of challenges.
You’ll quickly realize this new challenge demands your strongest combat skills. Fortunately, we’ve faced it before and want to share what we’ve learned to help you prepare. Plus, Kratos is joining the fight with powerful, ever-improving abilities.
Let’s dive right in!
Train Your Muscle Memory Right
Attacks will appear in four different colors, and understanding what each color means will help you react quickly and automatically. Think of it like a simple game of rock-paper-scissors – knowing the color will give you a big advantage.
When your opponent attacks with red, dodge to create an opening and strike back. Defend against blue attacks, and parry yellow attacks to throw your enemy off balance. Always avoid purple attacks. Once you learn these color-based responses, you’ll react instinctively, like a skilled warrior, relying on your reflexes during combat.
Know Your Enemy Drops

The rewards you get from enemies, like the items they drop, depend on how you attack them. Simple attacks give you yellow orbs that recharge your Spirit meter, letting you use powerful stun attacks. And those Spirit attacks then give you green orbs to restore your health.
Because your energy orbs are automatically collected, whether you need them immediately or not, it’s crucial to maintain your health, focus, and magical power to keep up a strong attack throughout a battle. You’ll get red orbs by defeating enemies normally, and blue orbs from enemies that use magic.
Know When To Back Off
If your opponent attacks with blue moves, blocking is a great opportunity to create some space and get back into a comfortable position. Use this moment to adjust your distance so you’re ready to counterattack as soon as their attack ends.
It’s natural to instinctively retreat when attacked, but a skilled warrior doesn’t just avoid danger. They use the opportunity to stun their opponent or launch a powerful counterattack. A true Spartan fights through the attack, turning their enemy’s momentum against them.
Know When To Go In For The Kill

See every yellow attack as a chance to intimidate your opponents and establish dominance, making them wary of facing you in the future. Successfully parrying not only turns the tide of battle but also helps you maintain control while your enemy remains standing.
As a fan, I’ve always loved how mastering the timing in combat isn’t just about dodging hits. It’s about turning the tables on your enemies! When you get it right, you can set them up for big stuns and then hit them with devastating counterattacks – basically punishing them before they even know what went wrong. It’s not about waiting for an opening; it’s about making one, and that’s what separates the truly great fighters.
Abuse The Stun Mechanic
To win fights, you need to find ways to stun your opponents. A good starting point is mastering your shield – learn to block and parry attacks to fill their stun meter. Don’t forget to use spirit attacks too; mixing them in when you can will give you an edge.
Beyond simple, powerful attacks, you can also use the environment, skills that stun, or an upgraded spear to knock enemies down. This sets them up perfectly for your most damaging attack to finish the fight. If you plan your attacks carefully, you’ll find that most enemies can’t survive your full combo.
Invest In A Diverse Loadout

As you progress, you’ll encounter enemies protected by special shields that are only vulnerable to certain types of attacks – spirit or magic specifically. To succeed, you need to be strategic like a Spartan and anticipate every possible situation in battle. The key is to have a dependable attack that can break through these shields.
Choose a method you’re familiar with, and fully understand how long it takes to launch, run, and finish. You need to be prepared to strike quickly when defenses are down. Don’t waste effort on ineffective attacks – Spartans value efficiency.
Purple Attacks and Positioning
We previously advised avoiding purple attacks completely, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t respond to them. Similar to dealing with blue attacks, the key is to find the right balance: create enough distance to stay safe, but also leave yourself space to attack back. Try not to react with a panicked dodge, and you’ll quickly learn to handle these attacks confidently.
These attacks are incredibly dangerous and can quickly lead to death. However, just like any challenge Kratos faces, they offer an opportunity to demonstrate his skill as a Spartan warrior and a formidable fighter – everyone has to begin somewhere, after all.
Use Spirit Attacks For Stability

It’s easy to want to use your Spirit attacks constantly to quickly stun enemies, since they do some damage while building up the stun effect. However, we suggest using them wisely. They’re also a valuable way to get health orbs when you’re taking a lot of damage.
Even skilled players make errors, and in the intense combat Kratos faces, those mistakes can be deadly if you can’t recover quickly. So, don’t use up all your energy for special attacks – save some to help you bounce back from errors. Focus on stunning enemies using the other techniques we’ve discussed, then unleash your full power. It’s not about defeating enemies quickly, but about doing so effectively and managing your resources well.
Buffs
Think of your buffs as flexible tools to enhance your fighting, not just as emergency saves. Don’t save them for when you’re desperate—use them proactively to adapt to whatever’s happening in the fight.
Close-range attacks are great for continuing combos, letting you inflict damage and quickly get ready to defend. Long-range attacks are useful for hitting enemies that are far away or dealing with dangerous opponents safely. You can also use them to recover after a missed move, allowing you to keep up the pressure while getting back into a good position.
Don’t Sleep on Movement Skills

It’s tempting to focus on abilities that increase damage, especially when playing as a powerful character like Kratos. However, don’t overlook his speed and agility. While movement skills might not directly inflict damage, they’re just as important as his strength and shouldn’t be ignored.
Ultimately, Sons of Sparta is a platformer, meaning collecting items is key. Speeding through levels helps you gather the gear you need to succeed. Plus, moving quickly lets you dodge enemy attacks, making every movement upgrade a worthwhile investment.
Backtrack At The Right Moments
When you get a new item that lets you reach new areas, it’s a good idea to go back and explore places you’ve already been. This helps you find better loot and materials for upgrades that you might have missed before.
Remember locations blocked by locked gates, high switches, or thorny bushes. You’ll eventually get tools – like a sling for gates and fire for bushes – to overcome them. As you progress and upgrade your abilities at special hubs, you’ll unlock even more ways to get around, making each attempt easier and more powerful.
Play To Your Strengths But Cover Your Weaknesses

Everyone fights in their own way, and a skilled warrior understands what they’re good at while also acknowledging their limitations. However, you don’t need to share those weaknesses with your opponents! Customizing your weapons and gear to fit how you play will leave your enemies baffled – if they’re even able to think straight while facing you.
Attachments let you customize your gear with different upgrades. Focus on improving what you’re already good at with one attachment, and use the other to fix a weakness. For example, if you avoid close combat, get upgrades that help you control crowds. Or, if you prefer fighting from afar, increase your weapon’s range or add some ranged attacks.
When you combine your natural talents with the skills you’ve developed, you’ll be a truly powerful player.
Use The Battlefield To Your Advantage
Skilled fighters don’t just depend on their own attacks; they take advantage of everything around them. Kratos is the same way – throwing objects from the environment at the start of a fight is a fantastic way to quickly stun enemies before you even begin attacking with your spear.
It’s helpful to have a couple of these ready to quickly stop enemy attacks or guarantee your combos start with a solid hit, especially against tougher opponents. Master the arena, and your enemies will regret ever crossing your path.
Practice Makes Perfect

Great warriors never stop training, and helping Kratos with resource gathering is a good way to stay ready for tough battles. However, overdoing it can leave you exhausted when you really need your strength.
Focus on making consistent, short runs that let you stay close to where you started. It’s also helpful to set small goals, like unlocking your next skill or upgrading your spear or shield. Once you achieve those goals, you can confidently move forward, knowing you’ve done everything to prepare for what’s coming next.
Don’t Sleep On Optional Content
If you want to maximize your power, optional gauntlets are a fantastic way to get temporary boosts that can help you defeat enemies. Try to get one whenever you unlock a new upgrade or skill, or if you’re struggling to progress efficiently. They’re great for practicing new abilities or improving your farming runs.
This system ensures you’re constantly progressing and makes the most of your time playing the game.
And that’s all we have for you as you take on the adventures of a younger Kratos.
