The 2020s are proving to be a fantastic era for horror, rivaling the iconic 1980s. Films like Sinners, Barbarian, and Smile have not only been successful but have also helped define the genre and usher in a new wave of quality horror. Beyond the big hits, many excellent horror movies have been overlooked, and fans are starting to realize there’s a hidden gem from 2022 on Netflix that deserves attention.
Chloe Okuno’s first feature film, Watcher, will soon be removed from Netflix. The psychological thriller, starring Maika Monroe and a Sundance Film Festival nominee, will no longer be available to stream after February 25th, giving subscribers only five days to watch it. The movie follows a young woman who feels isolated after moving to Bucharest with her husband, and begins to suspect a mysterious neighbor might be a serial killer.
Watcher Is a Genuinely Creepy Psychological Thriller
2022 delivered some fantastic horror films like Barbarian, X/Pearl, The Black Phone, and Scream, which meant the movie Watcher didn’t get as much attention. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth watching on Netflix before it’s gone. Watcher is a modern, suspenseful thriller in the style of Hitchcock. It slowly builds tension while exploring themes of female anger, focusing on being watched, feeling alone, manipulation, and the frustrating experience of not being believed. The story centers on Julia, who believes she’s being stalked, but her husband and the police dismiss her fears as paranoia.
The horror film Watcher builds suspense through a slow burn, using the eerie and foreign setting of Romania to emphasize the character’s growing isolation, paranoia, and vulnerability. Director Okuno crafts a truly immersive experience with long, unbroken shots, shadowy visuals, and masterful sound design, creating a consistently tense and unsettling atmosphere. Monroe delivers a standout performance as Julia, conveying her character’s fear and loneliness primarily through reactions and subtle expressions. The result is one of the most gripping thrillers in recent years, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes with strong reviews (86%) and a positive audience score (67%).
Where to Stream Watcher After It Leaves Netflix?
Don’t worry if you didn’t catch Watcher on Netflix before it was removed! You can still watch it on AMC+ or stream it for free on Tubi. It’s also available to rent or buy from various online platforms. While it might return to a major streaming service soon, details for March 2026 haven’t been announced yet.
