For years, Marvel fans wondered if Venom, a popular character, would ever get a good movie adaptation. After a disappointing appearance in Spider-Man 3, it seemed he’d remain a comic book favorite. However, actor Tom Hardy surprised everyone by not only starring in a Venom movie, but leading a whole trilogy centered around the anti-hero. While critics weren’t always impressed, the films collectively earned $1.8 billion worldwide, but the story seemed to be ending with 2024’s Venom: The Last Dance.
A new Venom movie is officially happening at Sony Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter! However, this one will be different – it’s going to be animated, not live-action. It’s a little unclear what role Tom Hardy will play, though he is confirmed to be involved somehow. It’s unknown if he’ll voice the character, if this movie continues his story, or if he’s just involved in future plans for Venom. On the bright side, we also know who’s directing!
New Venom Confirmed (And This Time He’ll Be Animated)

Sources at The Hollywood Reporter say the next Venom movie is moving forward with directors, even though a writer hasn’t been hired yet. Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who recently directed and produced the successful horror film Final Destination: Bloodlines and Freaks, will be both directing and producing the new animated Venom film. Their work on Bloodlines—which became the highest-grossing installment in the franchise—is a promising sign for fans. The shift to animation allows for even more outlandish and creative freedom with the character, similar to the comics, and the directors’ knack for unique and thrilling scenarios in Bloodlines seems perfect for Venom’s style of vengeance.
Currently, there’s no writer working on the animated Venom movie. Sony Pictures Animation plans to start with a writer’s room to develop the story. For Marvel fans, this likely means a significant wait. Animated films generally take a long time to make, and since the project doesn’t even have a basic plot outline yet, a finished script is still a ways off. While rumors about the movie surfaced last year, it’s probably still several years from being released.
Giving Venom his own animated movie is a smart move to keep the character popular without constantly needing to tie him to Spider-Man. In the comics, Venom started as Spider-Man’s black suit before becoming a major enemy. Fans hoped to see some connection to Spider-Man in the movies, but the short scene after the credits in Spider-Man: No Way Home now feels out of place because of the events in The Last Dance.
If Venom were to become an animated movie, it could break free from needing to connect to the storylines in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films and avoid pressure from fans to do so. However, an animated Venom movie would naturally raise the possibility of crossovers with the Spider-Verse animated films, considering the existence of a ‘Venom-Verse’ full of different versions of the character with a penchant for brains.
