CD Projekt Red usually keeps players informed about updates to their popular game, Cyberpunk 2077, sharing news about even small changes on social media and through gaming news sites. But surprisingly, a new Cyberpunk 2077 game is currently in development with very little public discussion – it’s mostly been talked about within smaller gaming communities and a few articles.
Everyone knows a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works, thanks to leaks and online discussion. But the new Cyberpunk 2077 project isn’t what most people expect – it’s a trading card game (TCG). And for those following CD Projekt Red’s other releases, it’s not entirely a surprise. This TCG looks fantastic, and it’s a shame it’s not getting more attention. It has the potential to be something truly special, even in a crowded market of gaming options.
Cyberpunk 2077’s New TCG Looks Amazing

CD Projekt Red, the creators of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, have a history of expanding their universes with related games and projects. They’ve already released a physical version of Gwent, a detailed Witcher 3 board game, and Gangs of Night City. They’re also developing a Cyberpunk 2077 board game that was hugely successful on Gamefound, raising over $10 million. So, a Cyberpunkthemed trading card game feels like a natural step, especially as a companion to their fantasy game, Gwent*.
WeirdCo is creating the Cyberpunk TCG, and they’re notable for building it entirely without using artificial intelligence. This card game appears to be their first project, which is especially remarkable given how intricate and well-developed it is. You can get a sneak peek by downloading PDF versions of two starter decks simply by following their upcoming Kickstarter campaign – and the cards look fantastic! The game features a fairly complex rule system, but it’s all supported by beautiful artwork that brilliantly captures the familiar imagery of Cyberpunk 2077 in a stylish and detailed way.
The collectible card game in Cyberpunk 2077 takes inspiration from the original role-playing game by focusing on completing jobs rather than simply reducing your opponent’s health. You’ll use your characters, equipment, and cyberware to achieve these objectives, while also trying to steal your opponent’s jobs and disrupt their strategy. The game is designed to be quick and action-packed, avoiding the slow build-up phases found in games like Magic: The Gathering. Instead, it emphasizes fast-paced battles where you sell cards to earn money and keep the action going. While it offers a unique approach, it faces the challenge of standing out in a crowded market.
Cyberpunk 2077’s TCG Will Have To Do A Lot To Stand Out

The new Cyberpunk trading card game is entering a crowded market where a few major players, like Magic: The Gathering and the Pokémon TCG, are already very successful and continue to grow. Having a cool idea and looking good isn’t enough to succeed. We’ve seen other games, like Altered, quickly disappear from store shelves because they couldn’t compete. While League of Legends’ Riftbound shows there’s still a chance for new games, breaking into this market is incredibly difficult.
Launching on Kickstarter will be a big help, providing both an initial player base and a community to support future expansions – this is how games like Altered have remained successful, and how other smaller trading card games continue to grow, even without retail or online presence. Cyberpunk TCG already has a recognizable name, which is a huge advantage. Simply featuring popular characters like Rebecca, Lucy, David, and Adam Smasher on the cards could generate interest. With the new Edgerunners season planned and more Cyberpunk 2077 video games on the way, there are many opportunities for exciting collaborations and expansions.
While Riftbound is gaining popularity, the Cyberpunk TCG needs to do more than just rely on luck of the dice to become truly well-known. The game’s rules are already complex enough for fun matches, but its future feels a bit limited in terms of different ways to play. Magic: The Gathering remains popular because fans and the game’s creators constantly support a variety of playstyles and formats, and the Cyberpunk TCG could really benefit from that same approach to grow.
Even so, I’m really excited we’re getting a Cyberpunk card game! I already love the game’s artwork and I’m happy to spend a lot of money on cards featuring it. CD Projekt Red could probably promote it a bit more effectively, though. I only discovered it by chance, and the Kickstarter’s follower count suggests others feel the same way. I hope more people find out about it and support it like they did with the board game – that way, I can get really into another collectible card game, even if I end up with no one to play with!
