As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited when Jac Schaeffer led the charge for their first TV series on Disney+.
Jac Schaeffer, the creator of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, has signed a three-year deal with Amazon, MGM Studios, and Prime Video. She will develop, write, executive produce, and direct new TV series for them. This move means she’s stepping away from Marvel Studios for the time being, according to Variety.
Schaeffer began her career at Disney by writing the short film Olaf’s Frozen Adventure before moving on to write the Universal film The Hustle, starring Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway. She then returned to Marvel Studios, where she created WandaVision, the first show for Disney+, contributed to the story for Black Widow, and later became the showrunner for Agatha All Along.
Jac Schaeffer, the head writer for WandaVision, previously signed a three-year contract with Marvel Studios and 20th Television to create new TV shows, but that deal concluded in 2024. Following this, she was chosen to direct the pilot episode for a planned female-led reboot of Holes on Disney+, but the project was ultimately cancelled in December.
Schaeffer is part of a growing number of people at Marvel Studios who have taken on bigger roles after achieving success with their projects. A prime example is Joe and Anthony Russo, whose critically acclaimed films, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War, led to them directing the Avengers movies.
Directors like Peyton Reed (Ant-Man), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Jon Watts (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) all did such a good job with their first Marvel movies that they were asked to direct three films each. James Gunn’s success even led to him becoming the head of DC Studios, Marvel’s biggest competitor.
The lead writer of WandaVision isn’t the only one from the show finding success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Director Matt Shakman landed a highly sought-after job directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and is expected to return for the next installment.
The success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings led Disney+ to give director Destin Daniel Cretton the opportunity to work on Wonder Man. He was also chosen to lead the next major Spider-Man storyline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and was initially slated to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Jac Schaeffer Is Missing Out on the Perfect MCU Project For Her

The creator of WandaVision significantly impacted the Marvel Cinematic Universe, launching what many consider to be Marvel Studios’ strongest Disney+ series to date. Jac Schaeffer also silenced critics with Agatha All Along, a spin-off focused on a villain some initially thought wasn’t worth pursuing, and which became a fan favorite.
Jacqueline Schaeffer was originally going to be the showrunner for a third Marvel series, VisionQuest, intended as the conclusion to the story that began with WandaVision and continued in Agatha All Along. However, she decided to let Terry Matalas, known for Star Trek: Picard, take over. Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter that Agatha All Along and VisionQuest had too much overlap to realistically work together.
I was really disappointed to realize that Agatha All Along and VisionQuest conflicted with my schedule, and I wouldn’t be able to continue with both. It was a tough decision, but ultimately it just wasn’t practical. I’m still very excited about the show and I’m a huge supporter of everyone working on it, especially Paul Bettany.
News reports indicate Marvel Studios is working on a standalone project featuring Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff. Following the popularity of WandaVision, fans strongly hoped Beau Schaeffer would write and direct a future Scarlet Witch movie or Disney+ series. However, that now appears unlikely due to Schaeffer’s new agreement with Amazon.
It’s possible that Elizabeth Schaeffer’s availability will open up just as Marvel Studios decides to fully commit to a Scarlet Witch movie, and she’s previously supported the idea. Although her contract with Amazon ends in 2029 after three years, it’s uncertain what her career will look like after working on original television series.
