Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man star talks reuniting with a “very different” Cillian Murphy

Jay Lycurgo, known for his role in ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man,’ recently discussed working with Cillian Murphy again. He noted that their recent collaboration felt quite different compared to when they first worked together on the independent film ‘Steve’.

This week, 28-year-old actor, known for his roles in Netflix’s The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself and Channel 4’s Generation Z, chatted with TopMob at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

Lycurgo quickly became a standout performer at the festival, building on the success of his role in the Netflix series Steve. He played a struggling student opposite Murphy’s character, a school headteacher facing challenges.

I was so surprised by Cillian Murphy’s performance! He plays someone totally different from Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders – it really shows how incredibly talented he is. I heard him mention on the red carpet that this role was a big departure, and honestly, it’s amazing to see his range.

He described his character, Steve, as feeling lost and vulnerable. He added that he and Steve were both going through their own personal journeys, which was a separate issue entirely.

Compared to his previous role, Lycurgo explained, “Tommy Shelby is just incredibly cool. Seeing Cillian Murphy in the suit for the first time, it all clicked – I understood why the character and the look are so famous.”

Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man continues the story from the BBC series, following Tommy Shelby as he faces challenges in Britain during World War II.

The much-awaited film will be shown in theaters for two weeks starting Friday, March 6, 2026, and will then be available on Netflix later that month.

The cast of Peaky Blinders is growing with the addition of Lycurgo, Rebecca Ferguson (known for Silo and Dune), Tim Roth (from She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Tin Star), and Barry Keoghan (starring in Saltburn and a film about The Beatles).
