Horror movies are having a major moment right now, with several recent films earning both critical praise and box office success. Films like Sinners are even in the running for major awards – it’s a contender for Best Picture at the Oscars, and Amy Madigan is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Weapons. While Sam Raimi’s Send Help might not win awards, it’s his highest-rated film ever on Rotten Tomatoes (even better than Spider-Man 2!) and had a strong opening weekend. There are lots of horror movies coming out, but not all of them are hits – the new release Psycho Killer unfortunately received very negative reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
I was really surprised to see that Psycho Killer currently has a 0% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes! It’s based on only 20 reviews so far, but audiences don’t seem to love it much either, giving it a 32% score. The general consensus, as Rotten Tomatoes puts it, is basically ‘run away!’ – so it sounds like this isn’t a movie worth seeing in theaters.
Psycho Killer‘s Rotten Tomatoes Score Is an Unfortunate End to Its Development Saga

The movie Psycho Killer had a very difficult journey to release. The script was first written way back in 2007, but it took almost twenty years for the film to finally come together. While Gavin Polone signed on as director in 2010, filming didn’t actually start until 2023. Now, three years after filming wrapped, the movie is finally being released, but unfortunately, it’s received very negative reviews. After so much effort and time, it’s a letdown that Psycho Killer didn’t turn out well.
Screenwriter Andrew Walker is famous for writing Seven, the highly praised film directed by David Fincher, known for its dark tone and suspense. Though Psycho Killer wasn’t expected to be a masterpiece, Walker’s previous work gave it some promise. While his films after Seven have received varying reviews, he did write The Killer, another successful thriller with Fincher, proving he could still create compelling entertainment. Unfortunately, Psycho Killer represents a new low point in his career.
While Psycho Killer had an interesting premise – a police officer investigating her husband’s murder while becoming a target herself – the film ultimately doesn’t deliver on its potential. Critics have pointed to problems with the directing, a confusing plot, and unconvincing acting. Unlike many poorly received movies, there aren’t even a few redeeming qualities that would make Psycho Killer worth a single viewing, unless you’re simply curious about how bad it is.
Given the early buzz, Psycho Killer probably won’t perform well in theaters. There are a lot of different movies out now, each targeting a specific audience, and Send Help is still a popular choice for horror fans. It’s likely Psycho Killer will get lost amongst the competition, and while it was relatively inexpensive to make (under $10 million), it remains to be seen if it will earn back its costs. It might find more success on streaming platforms, where horror fans are often willing to try lesser-known films.
