Prequel to a Near-Perfect Thriller Series Just Got a Major Update

As a huge fan of the original, I’m so excited the BBC is finally giving us a peek at what seems to be a prequel! They haven’t officially said it’s a prequel yet, but the cast list they just dropped is fantastic. We’ll be seeing Ann Skelly, who you might know from House of Guinness, as the lead, Martha Schmitt. And joining her are Nate Mann (Masters of the Air), Jannis Niewöhner (Munich: The Edge of War), and Rory Kinnear (The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power) – seriously, what a lineup!

The upcoming series Honey, from the creator of Killing Eve, has announced a strong cast, adding to the excitement around this prequel. The show explores the earlier life of Carolyn Martens (originally played by Fiona Shaw in Killing Eve), focusing on her time as a young MI6 agent named Martha Schmitt, played by Ann Skelly. Martha operates undercover and constantly faces danger as she tries to evade Friedrich, the new head of counterespionage for the Stasi, who suspects her true identity.

Will Honey Live Up to Its Predecessor?

The new series, Honey, arrives a few years after the divisive ending of Killing Eve. The original show’s finale was so unpopular with some fans that they’re reluctant to even try Honey. One Reddit user expressed this sentiment, saying, “Why revisit Killing Eve after they ruined such a good show? The final season and especially the finale were a disaster—best to just leave it alone.” However, many who enjoyed the first two seasons of Killing Eve are willing to give Honey a chance.

I was completely hooked on Killing Eve when it first came out! It followed Eve, this MI5 officer who was so bored with her office job, and then she got assigned to track down this fascinating assassin named Villanelle. It quickly became this intense, twisted game between them – they were both obsessed with each other, and it just escalated. Everyone loved it for so long, but honestly, the final season felt like it lost its way. It just didn’t have the same spark that made the show so amazing in the beginning.

Look, Killing Eve definitely had its moments, but things got pretty convoluted towards the end. Now, with Honey, I’m hoping we get a more focused and satisfying story. It feels like this new series has a real chance to deliver on the promise of its talented cast and actually make sense of everything that happens – a solid, cohesive narrative is what I’m really looking for.
