As a movie and TV fanatic, I definitely remember the huge wave of young adult stories in the 2010s. While that craze has cooled down, some projects really stuck with audiences. We were flooded with dystopian futures where teens were saving the world – think The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and Divergent, and tons of movies trying to be just like them. TV had fewer options in that genre, but one show from that time really shined and, even twelve years later, it’s still fantastic.
Like many popular young adult movies and series, this show was based on a successful book series, which already gave it a built-in fanbase. However, the show’s strong quality is what really made it a hit. It includes all the familiar elements of post-apocalyptic young adult stories – a group of teens battling to save humanity, over-the-top villains, surprisingly intricate political maneuvering, and genuinely moving character deaths. The 100 was a prime example of the wave of young adult adaptations on television in the 2010s, and even though that trend has faded, the show remains incredibly compelling to watch.
Premiering on The CW in 2014, The 100 quickly became popular. Based on Kass Morgan’s book series, the show takes place far in the future, after a nuclear disaster has wiped out most of humanity. The few remaining survivors live on a massive space station. When supplies begin to run low, 100 young prisoners are sent to Earth to determine if it’s safe to live on again. As you might expect, sending a group of teenage criminals wasn’t the smartest plan.
‘The 100’ Is One of the Best Post-Apocalyptic Shows
Post-apocalyptic science fiction is surprisingly popular, even though there aren’t many well-known TV shows and movies in the genre. While some stories, like The Walking Dead and Fallout, become huge hits, many excellent examples, such as The Road and The Book of Eli, often fly under the radar. The 100 was a standout series that successfully brought this sub-genre to a wider audience.
The 100 offers something for everyone, whether you’re a dedicated sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fan or just a casual viewer. The show features compelling characters, intense drama, and complex relationships, all remarkably well-developed for a CW series. It combines these elements with brutal conflicts between the groups struggling to survive on Earth, further complicated by the arrival of people from The Ark who disrupt the existing power dynamics. Similar to the Fallout series, The 100 explores how people might act when pushed to their limits, though it trades power armor and talking zombies for a more grounded approach.
‘The 100’ Keeps Getting Better

CW
It’s incredibly frustrating to start a long TV series and then be disappointed by the ending – just think of Game of Thrones. Luckily, The 100 avoids that pitfall. Many viewers actually believe the show gets better with each season. While the first season received mixed reviews (a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the last three seasons all earned perfect 100% scores, and every season has been certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes.
