The Resident Evil games are centered around death – you’re always battling hordes of zombies! But the developers at Capcom aren’t shy about killing off characters, especially if they aren’t crucial to the overall plot. While only a handful of the main characters have actually died on screen, many beloved supporting characters have met their end throughout the series.
These are six of the most surprising deaths in the Resident Evil series. Be warned: this list contains major spoilers for the entire story!
6) Lisa Trevor – The Umbrella Chronicles

Lisa Trevor is a deeply tragic figure in the world of Resident Evil. As a child, she was brought to the Spencer Mansion, built by her father. Both she and her mother were subjected to horrific experiments, which resulted in her mother’s death and transformed Lisa into a monstrous being. Researchers kept her hidden beneath the mansion to continue their cruel experiments.
Okay, so I was playing as Jill Valentine in the Resident Evil Remake, and I finally broke free, but things didn’t go smoothly. I actually fell off a cliff at the end of one fight and somehow survived – seriously! I ended up back inside the mansion, where I had a showdown with Albert Wesker, one of the guys who was messing with me. It didn’t go well, though. A chandelier came crashing down, and Wesker just left me there to die as the whole mansion blew up. Talk about a rough ending!
5) Piers Nivans – Resident Evil 6

A lot of people criticize Resident Evil 6, and for good reason. But one character, Piers, was genuinely kind and deserves a better fate – he should have survived Chris’s storyline. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
It was heartbreaking watching the finale! When Chris was on the verge of dying, Piers made the ultimate sacrifice. He actually cut off his own arm and deliberately infected himself with the C-Virus to save Chris. As they were racing to the escape pods, Chris tried to reassure him, saying everything would be alright, but honestly, we all knew that wasn’t going to happen. Piers stayed behind, accepting his fate and knowing the virus would eventually consume him. Chris made it out, thankfully, but Piers tragically died in the explosion that destroyed the facility – and HAOS with it. It was such a brave, selfless act.
4) Robert Kendo – Resident Evil 2

Kendo’s story is heartbreaking in both the original and updated versions of Resident Evil 2. The remake reveals his daughter has been infected by the zombie virus, and he’s forced to make the agonizing decision to end her suffering. After he shoots her, another gunshot is heard. It’s eventually confirmed that Kendo took his own life, unable to cope with losing both his wife and daughter to the outbreak.
It’s sad to hear about Kendo’s death, but the way it happens in the first game is even more surprising. It’s completely unexpected. The remake builds up to his death, letting you know it’s coming and unavoidable. In the original game, however, Kendo is instantly killed when zombies break through the glass of his shop.
3) Luis Serra – Resident Evil 4

Luis’s death scene varies between the original Resident Evil 4 and the remake. In the original game, you don’t get to know Luis as well, so his death – when he’s impaled by one of Saddler’s tentacles – is a real shock. He’s pierced and then hoisted into the air – a truly gruesome end.
The remake of the game actually makes Luis’s story even more impactful. We spend more time with him before the main events, so we get to know and like him better. While his death isn’t as visually dramatic as the original, because we’ve grown to care about him more, it feels much more shocking and upsetting.
2) David Anderson – Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Anderson isn’t a central figure in Resident Evil; he’s quickly killed off after a brief appearance. However, his death is particularly shocking. While patrolling the swamp, he encounters Ethan Winters and warns him to leave. Anderson asks Ethan to meet him at the garage and provides him with a knife for protection.
It’s unfortunate both men ended up in the garage. During their confrontation, Anderson wouldn’t listen to Ethan. While they argued, Jack Baker quietly appeared behind Anderson. Anderson didn’t hear Baker lift his shovel, and he never saw it coming when Baker split his head open with a single swing. It was a shocking and brutal moment, easily one of the most memorable on this list.
1) Ethan Anderson – Resident Evil Village

The twist in Resident Evil Village isn’t that Ethan dies, but when he died. Players were shocked to learn he’d actually been deceased for most of the last two games, making the reveal far more impactful than his death itself.
At the end of Village, Ethan faces a piece of Eveline’s mind that’s been inside him. This reveals that Ethan actually died early in Resident Evil 7 at the hands of Jack Baker. He’s been kept functioning – and able to heal from injuries – by the Mold. It’s a surprising and strange way for Ethan’s story to end, and it raises some odd questions about how things work biologically in the Resident Evil world, but let’s not go there right now.
