Amazon is shifting away from expensive game development and has canceled its plan to publish a major narrative game from Maverick Games. However, according to The Game Business, the company still intends to release Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. Amazon says this change will give Maverick Games the freedom to find a publishing partner that better fits their vision.
To better focus on projects that utilize Amazon’s strengths, like the recent relaunch of Luna and our partnership with Crystal Dynamics on the Tomb Raider franchise, we’ve decided to end our publishing agreement with Maverick Games, a company spokesperson said.
We greatly admire the team at Maverick Games and the exciting story-driven racing game they’re developing. They’ve decided to seek a different publishing partner whose goals better match their plans for releasing the game. We’re happy with what we achieved together and wish them all the best going forward.
Mike Brown, the creative director, and Harindar Sangha, the CEO and co-founder, expressed their gratitude to Amazon Games for their collaboration. They confirmed that development on the story-driven driving game is ongoing, and that the studio is now exploring potential partnerships with other publishers.
We appreciate our work with Amazon Games and are happy with how development on our first game is going. We’re currently talking to potential partners who are as excited about the future of this game as we are, and we plan to have more news to share later this year.
Amazon Games first announced they would publish the game developed by Maverick Games in May 2024. Back then, Christoph Hartmann was still in charge of the division. However, Hartmann left Amazon in January.
Maverick Games is currently keeping details about its new game under wraps, but the team is composed of experienced developers from major studios like Playground Games, the creators of Forza Horizon. In fact, the studio’s founder previously led the creative direction of the Forza Horizon series.
Founded in 2023, Maverick Games has been developing a driving game ever since. They describe it as an open-world game with a strong focus on story, but details about the plot and gameplay are still unknown. Although the team has experience with open-world racing games, they’ve deliberately avoided using the word ‘racing’ in their description, suggesting this new game might be different from typical titles in the genre.
In October, Amazon Games began shifting away from creating large-scale, high-budget games, starting with the cancellation of New World: Aeternum and a reduction of over 14,000 jobs. Then, in December, they sold the rights to their work-in-progress multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game, March of Giants, to Ubisoft. March of Giants was intended to be a new competitor in a market largely controlled by games like Dota 2 and League of Legends.
