Final Fantasy 7 is a beloved classic in the popular Final Fantasy series, which is why it’s being remade as a trilogy, starting with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020. Despite the remake, many fans still enjoy the original game. To cater to them, Square Enix released an updated version of the original 1997 Final Fantasy 7. This new version completely replaced the previous 2013 edition on Steam when it launched on February 25th, but the release didn’t go as smoothly as the company expected.
The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 wasn’t as smooth as the versions on PlayStation. With the last part of the game’s remake coming soon, Square Enix wanted to improve the PC experience for players. However, the updates didn’t go as planned, and the “enhanced” version quickly received many negative reviews on Steam. Fortunately, a patch is now available to fix the biggest problems.
Final Fantasy 7 Gets New Patch on Steam to Address Speed Issues
The updated version of Final Fantasy 7 was designed to improve the PC version of the original 1997 game. It automatically replaced the older version as a free download for those who already owned the 2013 release. This new version was meant to be better and included several new features, such as:
- 3× speed mode
- Play through the game at up to three times the speed! This feature can only be used in battle, travel, and select events.
- Ability to turn battle encounters off
- Activate this option to turn off random encounters. Story event battle still must be completed to advance the story.
- Battle enhancement mode
- Activate this mode to recover HP/MP during battles and max out the Limit gauge.
- Autosave feature
The recent updates were meant to make the PC version of Final Fantasy 7 as good as the console versions. However, it seems increasing the game’s speed caused more problems than it solved. Shortly after the update released, many Steam users complained that the 3x battle speed was malfunctioning. The faster frame rate caused problems with how dialogue and animations lined up, and also made it difficult to properly execute commands during battles.
Although the new version initially received mostly negative reviews, things are looking up. Square Enix quickly released an update that seems to fix the biggest problems with performance and gameplay. This patch came out just hours after the negative reviews started appearing on Steam. The update notes are short, but state that it improves the speed of certain scenes, including battles. Many players have already updated their reviews to reflect these improvements.
The updated version of Final Fantasy 7 seems a bit better than the original PC release. The Steam reviews should improve as more people try the game after the recent patch, although some problems might still need fixing. The developers responded quickly to player feedback, which suggests this new version will likely be as good as the older 2013 version that was removed from sale.
