Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe’s Creative Director Has Left Ubisoft, Jean Guesdon to Take Over

Following a recent company restructuring at Ubisoft, there are now changes happening with the Assassin’s Creed franchise. VideoGamesChronicle reports that Clint Hocking, the creative director for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, has left Ubisoft. This news was shared internally by the new leadership overseeing the Assassin’s Creed series.

Even though Jonathan Hocking has left, development on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe will continue. Jean Guesdon, who leads content for the Assassin’s Creed series, will now be the creative director. Ubisoft released a statement thanking Hocking for his contributions to the company over the years.

We’re grateful for Clint’s leadership, creativity, and hard work over the years and wish him all the best in the future,” a spokesperson said. “Work on Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe is moving forward with a strong team, and we’re aiming to create a unique experience within the Assassin’s Creed series. We’ll have more details to share soon.”

In January, Darby McDevitt, narrative director for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, shared that Christopher Grilli, a writer on both Mirage and Valhalla, is contributing to the project, but working on separate content with a different team. Kristen McGorry is leading the main storyline as the game’s lead writer, according to McDevitt.

We still don’t know exactly what this “other content” refers to. But based on recent confirmation from McDevitt, it seems likely that Grilli is either creating additional content for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe, or developing downloadable content to be released after the game launches. The Assassin’s Creed fan account Zephryss believes it’s the latter, suggesting the core game plans remain unchanged.

We first heard about Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe in 2022, but very little information has been shared about the game. It was announced at the same time as Codename Red, which we now know as Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Recent rumors suggest that Ubisoft plans to finish supporting Assassin’s Creed Shadows after its launch before releasing Codename Hexe.

I’m so hyped for Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe! From what I’ve heard, it’s going to be set during the witch trials, which sounds incredibly atmospheric. Apparently, it’s shaping up to be the darkest Assassin’s Creed game yet, and they’re really leaning into horror elements – which is something I’ve been wanting to see in the series for a while. It sounds like they’re keeping everything we love about Assassin’s Creed, but adding a whole new layer of spookiness!

Following a recent reorganization at Ubisoft, the Assassin’s Creed series is now being developed by Vantage Studios, one of five internal creative teams. This studio is also responsible for the Far Cry franchise. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently announced that two Far Cry games are in development, as well as multiple Assassin’s Creed titles.

Ever since Ubisoft announced changes to its company structure, employees have been voicing their concerns. Some union leaders have even asked for the CEO, Yves Guillemot, to step down.
