Some players were disappointed with God of War: Sons of Sparta because its advertising suggested a two-player cooperative mode, but the game is actually played as a single-player experience.
I was so excited to hear this game has a couch co-op roguelike mode! It’s a bit of a bummer you have to finish the main story to unlock it, and that story is pretty lengthy – I’ve heard it takes around 20 hours to beat. Still, knowing it’s there as a reward keeps me motivated!
A recent PlayStation blog post explains why the Pit of Agonies is initially unavailable to players. It’s designed to help them learn the game’s combat system and different enemy types, as that’s the main goal of the mode.
It doesn’t really matter how you got here, but you can now play the roguelike mode whenever you want, either by yourself or with a friend.
All you need to do is enter the following code on the game’s starting menu:
Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right L1 R1 Touch Pad
Once done correctly, the mode will appear in the menu. Ta-da!
Pit of Agonies is a tough challenge mode for one or two players. You fight through a series of arenas, and after clearing each one, you get to choose a bonus – like a powerful weapon or a stat increase – before continuing to the next arena.
As I play, I’ll earn special currency that lets me buy permanent upgrades. It’s awesome because these upgrades stick with me even after each run, so I slowly but surely get more powerful over time. It’s a really satisfying way to progress!
This feature adds extra replay value, and now all players can enjoy it – you don’t need to finish the main game first!
