This isn’t just a small update to a game that’s been running for 22 years; it’s the second part of a larger story arc and includes features players have been asking for for a long time. Midnight promises big changes, from letting players fully customize their own homes to making combat easier to learn. Whether you used to play and are thinking of returning, or you already play and are considering pre-ordering, here are fifteen important things to know before you buy World of Warcraft: Midnight.
11th Expansion Overall, and 2nd in the Worldsoul Saga
With Midnight, World of Warcraft receives its eleventh major expansion and the second chapter in the ongoing Worldsoul Saga. Picking up the story from 2024’s The War Within, World of Warcraft: Midnight takes players from underground into a dangerous confrontation with the Void, building towards an epic conclusion planned across three expansions. For those following the Worldsoul Saga, Midnight is an essential part of the story.
Story is Driven by the Void’s Assault on Quel’Thalas
The story of Midnight revolves around a Void invasion of the elven kingdom of Quel’Thalas. When a Voidstorm hits Eversong Woods, the homeland of the blood elves, Xal’atath, the Harbinger, causes widespread chaos and attempts to destroy all light. Returning to these familiar locations allows Blizzard to creatively update Warcraft’s most beautiful areas, as players work together to defend the Sunwell. Midnight promises an intense story where the conflict is deeply connected to the powerful cosmic forces that are now central to World of Warcraft’s narratives.
New and Revamped Zones, Including a Reimagined Eversong Woods
Like with every new Warcraft expansion, exploring new zones is a huge part of the fun, and Midnight delivers with three awesome ones. First up is the Alpine Zul’Aman, the home of the Amani trolls. Then there’s Harandar, a glowing jungle that’s the homeland of the new allied race, the Haranir – I’ll tell you more about them later! And finally, there’s the Voidstorm, a really messed-up place where we’ll be taking the fight straight to Xal’atath. But it’s not just about new areas; they’ve also revamped some old favorites. They’ve expanded Eversong Woods, connecting it to the Ghostlands, and totally rebuilt Silvermoon City to be a central hub – it looks amazing!
Player Housing Arrives
Player housing is now a central part of World of Warcraft, and the recent Midnight update changes how players progress and connect with each other. The best part? Everyone can own a home! It’s easy – there are no expensive costs, lotteries, or ongoing fees. You share a home with your Warband, and all your characters – even those on opposite sides – are welcome. Plus, decorations you earn with one character can be used by all of them!
Deep Housing Customisation Through Decor and Floorplans

Blizzard is making player housing a major feature, not just an addition, with extensive tools for designing and customizing your home. You can build and decorate the interior in either a simple or detailed mode, freely placing and resizing furniture and decorations. Outside, you can choose from four starting styles – Blood Elf, Night Elf, Orc, and Human – and then personalize the exterior with different windows, walls, towers, and other features to showcase your unique style and accomplishments in the world of Azeroth.
Neighbourhoods Create Shared Communal Spaces
You’ll be able to establish a home in one of two neighborhoods: Founder’s Point for Alliance players, or Razorwind Shores for Horde players. Each neighborhood has fifty building plots of the same size, offering a variety of locations – some on the edges, and others grouped closely together – so you can choose the perfect spot to suit your style and how much you want to interact with your neighbors. Blizzard seems to be encouraging close-knit communities, with monthly neighborhood-wide activities that unlock special decorations for everyone if completed.
New Alliance Race: The Haranir
The campaign in Midnight introduces players to the Haranir, a new race previously seen in The War Within expansion. Now, their story takes center stage, and players must complete quests to gain their trust. Available to both Alliance and Horde, the Haranir are an ancient, nature-revering race distinguished by bioluminescent markings. They offer unique customization options and character designs, enriching the world of World of Warcraft with their compelling lore.
New Demon Hunter Specialisation: Devourer
In the upcoming Midnight update, the Demon Hunter class is getting a significant redesign with the introduction of the Devourer, a new specialization. The Devourer uses Void magic to inflict damage and features unique abilities that depend on your chosen specialization and Hero Talents. This new spec is a mobile, mid-range fighter with powerful melee attacks and combo potential, highlighted by a special ability called Void Ray, which is similar to an Eye Beam.
A Suite of Fresh PvE Content

With the release of Midnight, players can explore eight brand-new dungeons, each offering unique settings and stories. There are also nine bosses to defeat across three new raids, and twelve missions designed for solo players. This variety suggests Blizzard is focusing on different ways to progress, appealing to those who prefer playing alone, with friends, or tackling challenging raids. Plus, ten new Delves introduce fresh layouts, enemies, and a brand-new companion character to aid in your adventures.
Combat Possibly WoW’s Most Accessible Yet
The upcoming Midnight update aims to simplify World of Warcraft for players of all levels, making combat easier to understand and use. Blizzard is redesigning class specializations to be less complicated – things like buffs and debuffs will be easier to follow, and the game will give clearer visual cues. They’re also focusing on making each specialization less demanding to learn, and reducing the need for add-ons, so it’s easier for new, returning, and experienced players alike to master any class.
New Opt-In Hunting System: Prey
A new hunting system is now available, allowing you to track and pursue challenging targets throughout the zones of Midnight. Once you activate Prey and lock onto a target, you can continue to explore as usual, but stay vigilant! These targets can appear at any time – while you’re exploring, completing activities, or even if they spot you first. With three difficulty levels, unique gameplay mechanics, and cosmetic rewards to earn, this system aims to add a fresh experience to World of Warcraft.
PvP Expands With New Battlegrounds and Training

The upcoming Midnight expansion introduces ‘Slayer’s Rise,’ a massive 40v40 battleground where Horde and Alliance players will clash in the Voidstorm. Blizzard says this new battleground is inspired by the large-scale battles of Alterac Valley and Isle of the Conquest. Players who keep War Mode enabled will also find additional World PvP opportunities within the Voidstorm. To make the game more accessible, Midnight includes all-new Training Grounds, designed to help new players become competitive.
Release Date and Pre-Order Rollout
World of Warcraft: Midnight launches worldwide on March 2nd at 11 PM GMT. If you’ve pre-purchased any version of the expansion, you’ve already been enjoying early access to the Housing system since December 2nd. If you haven’t yet, now’s the time – it’s a great way to get a head start on this major new feature!
Multiple Digital Editions, and a Physical Release
The expansion releases with three digital versions. The Base Edition includes the Midnight story, The War Within expansion, early access to housing, 500 in-game currency, and a boost to level 80. The Heroic Edition offers 1000 in-game currency, plus a Lightwing Dragonhawk mount and the Lightstrider Raiment outfit. The Epic Edition includes everything from the previous editions, along with beta access and three days of early access to the full expansion. There are many other bonus items available, like pets, mounts, and decorations – you can find a complete list on Blizzard’s website.
The World of Warcraft: Midnight Collector’s Edition is a deluxe physical package that includes the full game, along with a variety of *Midnightthemed collectibles. You’ll get an artbook, collector’s pins, and bonus items for use in the game, like pets, armor, decorations for your player housing, and unique artifacts.
PC and Mac Requirements
To run the game, you’ll need at least an Intel Core i6 processor (4.0 GHz or better) or an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, plus an Nvidia GeForce GTX 10-series, AMD Radeon RX 1, or Intel Iris Xe2 graphics card, and 8GB of RAM. For a smoother experience, the recommended specs are an Intel Core Ultra processor (8 cores, 5.2GHz boost) or AMD Ryzen Zen 5, an Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-series, AMD Radeon RX 3, or Intel Arc B-Series graphics card, and 16GB of RAM.
Okay, so I’m really excited to get this game running! From what I’ve gathered, if you’re on a Mac, you’ll need macOS 12 at the very least, but macOS 15 is what they recommend for the best experience. If you’re not using a Mac, you’ll need at least an Apple M2 chip or a 9th generation Intel Core processor, and a graphics card with 4GB of memory that supports Metal. They say the Apple M4 with 16GB of memory is ideal for both the processor and graphics. Like with most games, 8GB of RAM is the minimum, but 16GB is definitely better. And no matter what, you’ll need at least 128GB of storage space.
