Marathon’s Server Slam Crossed 143,000 Concurrent Steam Players, But Momentum is Already Faltering

It’s unclear if people were genuinely interested or responding to the game’s advertising, but the recent Server Slam for Marathon proved popular. The game reached a peak of 143,621 players on Steam about an hour after its launch yesterday.

While the game had a strong start, player numbers dropped to around 64,952 on the second day. We might see an increase over the weekend, but some players are criticizing the game’s design, including the user interface and art style. One issue, highlighted on Reddit, is that it’s hard to tell the difference between slightly better shields in your inventory, though filtering by item value can make it easier.

One Twitter user, Kelski, pointed out that the Contracts menu is visually cluttered with too many different fonts, capitalization styles, bold text, and extra spaces, calling it an “absolute eyesore.” While some players appreciate the game’s lighting and retro-futuristic aesthetic, others aren’t impressed – and that’s before even considering how well the game runs. Ultimately, whether or not the visuals are appealing comes down to personal preference.

This was just a preview of the game, which officially releases on March 5th for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Bungie is likely already working on solutions for any problems, so watch for updates. You can find all the details about Marathon here.
