
As a long-time Castlevania fan, let me tell you, the series’ history is a mess! It’s really hard to pin down what’s ‘official’ story and what’s not. Some games completely reboot the whole timeline, while others build on bits and pieces of what came before. Honestly, with so many different directions the story has taken, I’m bracing myself for the new game this year – I have a feeling it might just add to the confusion!
I’m really excited about Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse! From the first trailer, the story seems to follow someone connected to Trevor Belmont, who’s a huge favorite of mine – he was the main character in Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse. It’s cool they’re building on his legacy! He also appears in the Pachislot Akumajo Dracula III game, which is like a different take on the Castlevania story, but still features him, so it’s neat to see that continuity.
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Might Break The Timeline Again Like The Lords Of Shadow Series

The official storyline of Castlevania is surprisingly fragmented, with over 15 different alternate timelines that can be hard to follow. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse appears to borrow ideas from one of these timelines – often called the “Legends” universe – which never became a full game. The unreleased game Castlevania Legends would have starred Sonia Belmont, Trevor Belmont’s mother, as the first Belmont to fight Dracula as the main character in her own story.
Several aspects of Castlevania Legends reappear in Belmont’s Curse, particularly in the design of the main character, who closely resembles Sonia Belmont. Although this Sonia could be Trevor’s daughter rather than his mother, using a character from Legends creates a new timeline that ignores the established family history of Trevor’s ancestors.
Konami has altered the Castlevania timeline before, and Belmont’s Curse isn’t the only instance. The biggest change happened with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and its sequel, which completely restarted the series’ history. Instead of the original hero Leon Belmont, these games feature Gabriel Belmont, effectively rebooting the franchise.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow feels more like a 3D action game in the style of God of War than a classic 2D side-scroller. This change helps highlight how different it is from the rest of the series – a departure not seen for a long time. While some longtime Castlevania fans have mixed feelings about these games, they are definitely the most notable for breaking away from the established gameplay and storylines.
Multiple Castlevania Games Have Strayed From The Original “Canon” Of The Series

Games like Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth, Super Castlevania IV, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, and Castlevania: Circle of the Moon also stray from the established Castlevania storyline, though to a lesser extent than Lords of Shadow. The series has a history of not always telling connected stories, whether it’s by introducing new characters like Gabriel or reimagining existing ones like Richter Belmont.
The Castlevania series often plays with its own history, creating alternate timelines like one where the Belmonts aren’t a family by blood, but rather individuals chosen to carry the name and fight evil. Another example is the humorous ‘Kid Dracula’ timeline, which is much lighter in tone than most of the games. These frequent changes and departures from the established timeline can make it difficult to follow characters and understand their motivations or how they act throughout the series.
Characters like Trevor and Richter Belmont appear in so many Castlevania games that it’s hard to establish a definitive timeline of their actions. While many games closely follow the main storyline, they each include unique events that can create inconsistencies in how characters behave compared to their first appearances. This ambiguity often leads fans to question the story and characterizations in Belmont’s Curse.
Trevor Belmont’s Inclusion In The Newest Game Suggests A Return To Form For Castlevania

The atmosphere of Belmont’s Curse suggests a welcome return to the classic Castlevania style that longtime fans will appreciate. The game clearly respects its roots, which is likely why it includes a character from the original series. While Trevor’s appearance was boosted by the popular Netflix animated show, bringing back a character from the older games gives Belmont’s Curse a stronger connection to the original Castlevania legacy than Lords of Shadow did.
Even though bringing Sonia into the story might disrupt the established timeline, an older Trevor who recalls the events of Dracula’s Curse feels more consistent with the overall story than starting over with a reboot or spin-off. In fact, Belmont’s Curse might be the first Castlevania game in a while to stay relatively true to the original timeline, more so than many other games in the series have.
