According to a new report from Bloomberg, Bluepoint Games – the studio behind the remakes of Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus – proposed a remake of Bloodborne for early 2025, but Sony Interactive Entertainment, which recently closed the studio, rejected the pitch.
According to reports, although a remake seemed financially viable, the team at FromSoftware – the creators of the original Bloodborne – weren’t interested in pursuing it.
I was listening to an interview with Shuhei Yoshida, a former big shot at Sony, and he had an interesting take on why we haven’t seen a Bloodborne remake or sequel. He basically said Sony’s been holding off out of respect for Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Bloodborne. Apparently, they don’t want to put any pressure on him or FromSoftware to do anything with the game unless Miyazaki himself wants to!
Yoshida explained that, having left the company, he wasn’t privy to current plans. However, he believed that Miyazaki, a big fan of the game Bloodborne, might want to remake it. He speculated that Miyazaki, due to his success and workload, wouldn’t be able to work on it himself, and would prefer not to let anyone else take the lead. Yoshida added that the PlayStation team would likely honor Miyazaki’s preferences.
The first Demon’s Souls game was also created by FromSoftware. Hidetaka Miyazaki told Edge magazine in 2022 (as reported by VGC) that although he hadn’t played the remake made by Bluepoint Games, he was glad it introduced the game to a new audience. This supports the idea, suggested by Masaru Yoshida, that a remake of Bloodborne might not be necessary.
Miyazaki explained that while he wasn’t directly involved with the remake, he hasn’t played it either. He admitted he generally avoids replaying his older games because it brings back too many memories and emotions, making it difficult to enjoy. However, he’s happy to see the remake with its updated graphics and fresh presentation.
Seeing this old game remade and enjoyed by a new generation of players made me incredibly happy.
I worried that new players wouldn’t like the game as much as fans did originally, because it was quite challenging and difficult to make back then. I was concerned about that when we re-released it, but ultimately, I’m just thrilled to see people having fun with it now.
Honestly, one of the coolest parts of working on this remake was watching Bluepoint Games come up with ideas we never even thought of. They really took the visuals and gameplay mechanics in directions we couldn’t – or just didn’t – explore back when the original game came out. Seeing them research and implement these fresh ideas and techniques was genuinely exciting for me as a gamer and a developer.
Brandon Sheffield, who leads the team at Necrosoft Games (the creators of Demonschool), revealed that his studio also proposed a project connected to the game Bloodborne to Sony, but this was separate from any work done by Bluepoint Games.
According to Sheffield, many companies – including his own – have proposed ideas for a follow-up to Bloodborne, whether a direct sequel, a spin-off, or a remake. However, he believes none of these will move forward without FromSoftware’s approval and willingness to develop one.
Bluepoint’s Closure
Details about a potential Bloodborne remake emerged as part of a larger report on the recent closure of Bluepoint Games. Bloomberg reports that after Sony acquired Bluepoint, the studio continued to support Santa Monica Studio with the development of God of War Ragnarok.
Following the release of the latest God of War game in 2022, the studio started developing an online game set in that same world. The initial concept involved Atreus, the son of Kratos, being trapped in the Greek Underworld. Players would have likely controlled different forms of Atreus as they fought their way through hell, with plans for both cooperative play and continuous updates. However, the game’s overall design was still being developed and changed.
Bluepoint Games, a relatively small studio with a strong focus on art and technology, found it challenging to create a game that would continuously update with new content. Many of their team members preferred working on a classic, single-player action game instead of a live-service title.
Despite years of effort and support from Santa Monica Studio, Sony Interactive Entertainment decided to cancel the live-service God of War project in January 2025.
Around this time, Bluepoint Games proposed remaking Bloodborne, but Sony declined. They then suggested updating Shadow of the Colossus, the game they’d successfully remade in 2018, but that idea was also rejected. Bluepoint also explored developing new projects within other Sony-owned franchises, like a spin-off of Ghost of Tsushima, but none of these pitches were approved.
By February 2026, Bluepoint Games hadn’t landed a new project for over a year. When Sony announced on February 12th that it would remake the original God of War trilogy with another studio, employees at Bluepoint began to worry. Just a week later, the studio announced it was closing down.
Sources say Sony lost confidence in Bluepoint Games’ ability to independently develop a new game and couldn’t find a suitable partner for them to collaborate with.
With former Bluepoint Games employees now seeking new jobs, including within Sony, other companies have reportedly been exploring the possibility of reviving the studio, though it’s considered a long shot. Sources say these companies reached out to see if a rescue was possible.
