This Upcoming Samurai Game Has Me More Excited Than Ghost of Yotei Did

I’ve always been a fan of samurai games, but truly great ones are rare. Ghost of Tsushima is definitely one of the best, and it’s still a favorite game of mine, even when I’m not specifically looking for a samurai experience. The creators, Sucker Punch Productions, then released Ghost of Yotei, which I enjoyed, but it didn’t have quite the same impact as the story of Jin Sakai. Now, another samurai game is coming out this year, and it’s part of a famous series. Although details are scarce, I’m incredibly excited about it – perhaps even more so than I was for Ghost of Yotei.

I enjoyed Ghost of Yotei when it came out, but I was really looking forward to Onimusha: The Way of the Sword. The Onimusha series is known for its fast-paced, skillful samurai combat, and this new game seems like a fantastic return to that style. Instead of making a huge open world, which could have weakened the experience, Way of the Sword looks like it will focus on quick action, challenging fights, and a carefully designed structure. If Capcom delivers on its promises, this could be the best Onimusha game yet.

Onimusha’s New Direction Feels So Promising

What immediately impressed me about Way of the Sword is how Capcom has refined what makes its games special. The Onimusha series was known for its skillful sword fighting, scary enemies, and claustrophobic levels that created a really tense, almost horror-like experience. Now, after twenty years, Capcom hasn’t lost that knack – they’ve updated it for today’s games. The series is clearly evolving, and it looks fantastic; the gameplay footage we’ve seen hints at exciting and difficult combat.

This new approach feels great because it recaptures what made the older games so good. Often, when games get too big, their best ideas become less noticeable or get lost in the vastness. By focusing on a specific samurai action experience, Capcom is promising that everything – from battles to places to upgrades – will feel important and well-considered. It’s difficult to achieve that focused experience in open-world games, and it’s one reason why Ghost of Yotei, despite being a good game, sometimes felt stretched too thin across its large world.

I really like how Capcom is appealing to both longtime fans and new players with this game. It’s a great chance to re-introduce the series to people who might not have played it back when it was popular on PlayStation. By updating the gameplay and graphics while still keeping what makes the series special, Capcom could create something truly exciting and easy to pick up, especially considering their success with remastering older titles.

It Builds on the Legacy of Classic Samurai Games

Growing up, I loved samurai games, and the Onimusha series quickly became a favorite because of its thoughtful combat. It wasn’t just about flashy moves; the animations felt impactful, it encouraged careful defense, and required strategic thinking – all of which kept me completely engaged. Onimusha: Way of the Sword aims to capture that same feeling while also adding the improvements players look for in modern games.

This game’s design fits a growing trend in the genre. Titles like Ghost of Yotei proved popular by offering both a good challenge and a captivating story. However, not all samurai games need to be massive adventures. Some of the most memorable experiences I’ve had came from focused, intense moments that required quick thinking and adaptation, rather than relying on story beats. It looks like Capcom is aiming to recreate that same focused intensity with Way of the Sword.

Capcom has been consistently delivering excellent games lately, successfully breathing new life into both classic franchises and established series. This track record is why I’m optimistic about the return of Onimusha. If Way of the Sword maintains this level of quality and care, it has the potential to significantly revive the series and bring it a similar level of popularity as games like Sucker Punch’s samurai titles.

My Hype Surpasses What I Felt for Ghost of Yotei

While I really enjoyed Ghost of Yotei and thought it was a well-made game, I’m even more excited about Onimusha: Way of the Sword because it’s trying something different. Ghost of Yotei had a great world to explore and rewarded players for taking their time, but it felt similar to other open-world games and didn’t quite reach the level of Ghost of Tsushima. I spent a lot of time completing optional content, and I often wished the developers had focused more on improving the combat instead of making the world bigger.

Unlike Ghost of Yotei, Way of the Sword is all about perfecting combat. It’s a challenging samurai game that rewards practice and skill, encouraging players to learn and improve with each attempt. While Ghost of Yotei was fun, this game truly respects those who want to master its mechanics, and that’s exactly what I’ve been hoping for – which is why I’m so excited to see more of it from Capcom.

It’s incredibly heartwarming to see Onimusha back after so long. I have fond memories of playing the original games with friends, taking turns with the controller after each of us inevitably fell in battle. That feeling of discovering something special together has always stuck with me. If Capcom can even partially recreate that magic while updating the gameplay for today’s standards, this could be the best Onimusha game yet, and a fantastic revival of a beloved samurai series.
