PS1 Game From 2000 Reportedly Getting Remake Next Year

2000’s PS1 game originally by Square Enix might be getting a remake in 2026, and interestingly, it seems to be a revamp of their classic series, Dragon Quest, instead of Final Fantasy as we’ve seen in recent years. In the past, Square Enix has been revisiting its old games, either through rereleases or remasters, or even full-blown remakes like the ongoing remake of Final Fantasy 7. But this time, it appears that Dragon Quest fans are in for a treat with a new remake.

A recently released report hints that the classic PlayStation 1 exclusive title, Dragon Quest VII, might be getting a remake next year. The report doesn’t specify which platforms the remake will appear on, but given its strong ties to PlayStation systems, it’s likely to follow suit. Originally launched in Japan on the PS1 in 2000 and arriving in the west in 2001, Dragon Quest VII is a well-known game within the PlayStation family of consoles.

For some people, when they consider Dragon Quest VII, it might conjure up images of the Nintendo 3DS, since that’s where it first appeared in 2013, though it didn’t reach western markets until 2016. Interestingly, this version of the game was a remake itself, as the original had been launched on mobile devices in Japan back in 2015.

Initially, Heartbeat developed and Enix (now Square Enix following a merger) published the game we’re discussing. Upon launch, it received an 81 on Metacritic, which doesn’t place it among the top Dragon Quest games, but it is regarded as one of the stronger entries in the long-standing RPG franchise. Even though it isn’t one of the best, there are rumors that it could receive a second remake if this report is accurate.

Regarding the report, it arrives via MP1st and should be viewed cautiously. Keep in mind that, while the data might be correct, it’s possible for updates to occur, making it outdated. This is particularly true when it comes to game development, where things can change frequently.

Currently, Square Enix hasn’t responded to the recent report. Several factors lead us to believe they might not, but should anything change, we’ll make sure to keep the information updated. In the interim, feel welcome to share your thoughts below.
