5 Things That Still Don’t Make Sense About Avengers: Age of Ultron

Assembling The Avengers was an unbelievable feat, given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe took years to prepare, strategically positioning all its superheroes so they could converge on the big screen seamlessly. It’s almost a miracle that everything went smoothly and each solo movie leading up to The Avengers achieved both critical acclaim and financial success. Marvel Studios had such confidence in their approach that they thought they could repeat it to reunite Earth’s Mightiest Heroes for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Predictably, they were correct, as the sequel grossed more than $1 billion at the box office.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but admit that while Age of Ultron raked in a massive box office haul, it’s often labeled as the weakest Avengers film. The primary reason for this is its overly complex plot, which seems more focused on setting the stage for Infinity War and Civil War rather than delving deeply into Ultron’s storyline. Frankly, there are a few inconsistencies in Age of Ultron that leave me scratching my head.

1) Tony Stark’s New Attitude

In the movie “Iron Man 3,” there’s a significant change in Tony Stark’s personal life. Due to his errors, Pepper Potts almost meets harm. As a result, Stark demolishes all his Iron Man armors and appears ready for a fresh start. However, it seems that he intends to leave the past behind, but “Age of Ultron” has other ideas in store.

In the sequel of “Avengers,” Tony Stark initially joins forces with his friends to fight HYDRA. With an Infinity Stone at stake, it’s understandable that he would jump back into action. However, he goes beyond just helping out; he ends up creating Ultron after Scarlet Witch influences his thoughts, leading to unforeseen consequences.

2) The Helicarrier Conundrum

In the opening scenes of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers are pursuing HYDRA because Nick Fury, the head of SHIELD, unknowingly allowed HYDRA to flourish within his organization. Captain America dismantles HYDRA’s schemes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, sabotaging three helicarriers as part of Project Insight. Although Fury concedes to dissolve SHIELD at Cap’s insistence, he fails to disclose all his secrets.

In the midst of battle in Sokovia, Fury arrives with an aircraft carrier (helicarrier) to assist with evacuation. It’s revealed that Coulson had prepared the ship for Fury as a precaution against another global catastrophe on behalf of his previous superior. At that moment, Captain America seems pleased to see Fury, but there’s a sense that they should have had a discussion sooner because Fury isn’t always reliable in keeping promises.

3) Hulk and Black Widow’s Romance

In “The Winter Soldier,” I played the role of Black Widow, working alongside Captain America to dismantle HYDRA and unveil its hidden truths. The chemistry between Steve Rogers and me was undeniable throughout the film, culminating in a heartfelt kiss. Although Steve chose Agent 13 at the end of the movie, there remains an unmistakable potential for something more between us in the future.

In an unexpected twist, Age of Ultron introduces Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) and Bruce Banner as romantic partners. This is surprising because in The Avengers, Black Widow had to evade the Hulk due to her fear during their encounter. However, the challenge of their past interactions doesn’t seem to hinder their relationship development before they become a couple.

4) Thanos’ Motivation

In “The Avengers”, Thanos, the Mad Titan, dispatches Loki to Earth, with a mission to retrieve the Tesseract, a powerful artifact containing an Infinity Stone. However, during this operation, Thanos unintentionally lets go of another Infinity Stone – the Mind Stone, which was embedded in Loki’s scepter. HYDRA takes control of it until Iron Man (Tony Stark) seizes it and employs it to develop Ultron.

At the conclusion of Age of Ultron, Vision possesses the gem in his mind and intends to utilize it for heroic purposes. This doesn’t sit well with Thanos, who, as revealed in the movie’s post-credits scene, decides to take control of the situation himself. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain why events on Earth prompt this action from Thanos.

5) The New Avengers Team

In the final scenes of Age of Ultron, the majority of the original Avengers disband. Captain America and Black Widow decide to assemble a new squad comprising themselves, Falcon, War Machine, Vision, and Wanda Maximoff. As Cap points out, they’re not like the legendary 1927 Yankees, but their challenges are numerous and complex.

During the Battle of Sokovia, Vision and Scarlet Witch are still unpredictable factors. It might be wise to keep them out of the picture for a while, but things are moving quickly. Sadly, Captain America discovers the hard truth in Civil War that hastily assembling an Avengers team isn’t always the best strategy.
