In the initial scenes of Superman, our Man of Steel is already battled-scarred following a clash with Boravia’s Hammer, who unexpectedly proves to be Ultraman, a doppelganger of Superman. However, Lex Luthor doesn’t stop there as he sets loose a monster in Metropolis and instigates a conflict in Jarhanpur to divert Superman’s attention. From all corners, Luthor launches attacks against Superman, making it necessary for several other characters to join forces before the hero can defeat Luthor and imprison him, his rightful destination.
As Lex Corp’s CEO serves his prison term, the operation he initiated isn’t entirely fruitless. By breaching the Fortress of Solitude and extracting the message from Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, Lex unveils Kryptonians as they truly are – conquerors, to the world. However, while Superman vouches for the authenticity of the content, a fresh DCU speculation posits that those who crafted it were not entirely truthful in its creation.
Superman’s Parents Send Him to Earth With One Goal
In James Gunn’s film for the first time, Superman enters the Fortress of Solitude to recover following his initial defeat. To facilitate this healing process, robots monitoring the fortress play a recording from Jor-El and Lara, his parents, outlining the type of individual they desired him to become. They urged him to safeguard humanity and lead them into a promising future. Sadly, the transmission was incomplete due to damage during its voyage to Earth. Nonetheless, Superman comprehends the essence of their words and molds his entire being around their vision for him. However, the remainder of the message portrays Kryptonians quite differently from what he had previously understood.
When Lex discovers the location of the Fortress of Solitude, he journeys to the Arctic accompanied by the Engineer and Ultraman, whose genetics unlock the base. Uncertain of what awaits him, Lex strikes gold when he encounters a message. The Engineer employs her nanotechnology to decipher the remaining pieces, and upon hearing the entire message, Lex makes it public, revealing Superman’s intention to rule. The Man of Steel struggles to comprehend this revelation, but there isn’t much time for contemplation as Lex launches the next phase of his plan. By the end of Superman, the main character departs with the wisdom imparted by his Earth parents. However, it might be premature for him to let go of Jor-El and Lara since they could have been the ones behind the hologram.
An Evil Kryptonian May Have Hijacked Superman’s Life
It’s quite challenging to accept the concept of Jor-El, a character known for being wise and heroic, portrayed as evil in this new adaptation. In previous stories and films, he serves as a mentor for his son from beyond the grave, providing guidance whenever it’s needed. It seems that Gunn might be seeking to break away from traditional Superman origins, hoping to introduce something fresh and innovative. After all, he has expressed disinterest in rehashing certain superhero backstories on the big screen.
However, there is a small possibility that the filmmaker is playing a trick by presenting a misleading scenario, often referred to as a fake-out. A popular theory circulating online suggests that Jor-El may not be the one in the video, and instead, General Zod could be delivering the message. Given that Krypton is on the brink of destruction, it’s plausible for Zod to pose as Kal-El’s father, ensuring his beliefs would continue in the next generation.
As a dedicated movie buff delving into the lore of superheroes, I can’t help but notice a potential inconsistency in this narrative that centers around Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El. Being born and raised on Krypton, she would have known what her aunt and uncle looked like. Given Kal-El’s frequent broadcasting of his parents’ message, it stands to reason that Kara would be aware of it. However, in the storyline, Kara doesn’t seem to acknowledge any malicious intentions from her family regarding Earth’s conquest, nor does she appear to have watched this message.
It’s plausible that she simply trusts her cousin’s account about their parents wishing him to do good, which lends credence to the theory that she doesn’t view them as inherently evil. Conversely, Zod presents a different picture and, if he remains active, could potentially resurface on Earth to exact revenge upon Superman for his perceived failure in fulfilling his mission.
