It’s been almost ten years since there hasn’t been a new Star Trek show in production. With the completion of Season 2 of Starfleet Academy, the show’s sets are currently not in use, leaving fans without any new Star Trek television for the first time since 2017. This is a noticeable change, and now is a good time to consider what the next Star Trek project will be and what other shows might be coming in the future.
Just because things are quieter doesn’t mean the future of Star Trek is bleak, despite what some might say. With Paramount and Skydance now leading the way, we’re entering a new chapter, one that involves both fresh ideas and a look back at what’s worked. Rod Roddenberry recently expressed optimism, suggesting that these changes will be positive. While we can expect shifts, some projects previously in development might continue under the new leadership – though it’s unclear who will oversee them. The era of having several Star Trek series airing at the same time seems to be over, but there are still plenty of projects in development and exciting rumors circulating. There’s still a lot to look forward to, though the future of Star Trek may look a little different. Here’s a complete list of everything confirmed or rumored to be in the works after Starfleet Academy.
8. Paramount’s Star Trek Movie Reboot – CONFIRMED

After years of discussion about a fourth Star Trek movie featuring the actors from the recent films, Paramount has decided to move forward with a completely new story. This new film, to be directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (known for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), won’t be connected to the previous Star Trek timelines, meaning we won’t see Chris Pine or Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Kirk and Spock. It’s a risky change, but the franchise has been leaning heavily on nostalgia lately, and that approach can still continue in other projects.
8. & 7. Strange New Worlds Seasons 4 & 5 – CONFIRMED

Though Starfleet Academy is a secondary series, the main Star Trek show currently focuses on the USS Enterprise with Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount). Fans will be glad to hear that Season 4 is in post-production and expected to premiere on Paramount+ in 2026, consisting of ten episodes. Interestingly, this season will include an episode featuring puppets. Production on Season 5 is also complete and ready to go.
However, there’s a twist: Season 5 will be the last for this group of characters, and it’s expected to arrive around 2027 with just six episodes. The shorter season seems intended to wrap up Captain Pike’s story and lead directly into the original Star Trek series. Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami have been confirmed to appear in the final episodes as Dr. McCoy and Hikaru Sulu, respectively.
6. Starfleet Academy Season 2 – CONFIRMED

Whether you enjoyed the first season of Starfleet Academy doesn’t change the fact that it’s coming back for a second! Paramount was very confident in the show, giving it the go-ahead for Season 2 even before Season 1 finished airing. Filming for the new season is now complete, and Alex Kurtzman directed the finale.
All the main actors are set to return as the students begin their second year. However, Tatiana Maslany probably won’t be back, considering how her character’s storyline concluded in Season 1, and Paul Giamatti has stated he won’t be involved this time around (though it’s worth noting he may not be entirely truthful). With Tawny Newsome still working as a writer on the show, expect plenty of obscure references for dedicated fans. This season marks the end of the current run of shows overseen by Kurtzman, making it a crucial moment for the franchise’s future. Interestingly, the creator, Gaia Violo, has hinted to TrekMovie that the season will likely end on a cliffhanger, should Paramount decide to continue the series, describing the finale as something viewers won’t want to see end.
4. Star Trek: United – RUMORED

Many fans have long hoped for this project, and Star Trek: United could finally give the earlier Enterprise series the recognition it deserves. The proposed revival would center around Scott Bakula reprising his role as Captain Jonathan Archer, now as President of the newly formed Federation. Veteran Star Trek writer Michael Sussman has pitched the idea, which would explore the political consequences of the Romulan War.
Although Scott Bakula has expressed interest in revisiting his role on Enterprise, a return is still just speculation. However, with Skydance CEO David Ellison being a big fan of the show’s past, there’s a better chance of Bakula reprising his character now than there has been in decades. After all, unexpected things often happen!
3. Star Trek: Legacy – RUMORED
Many fans, especially those who grew up with it, consider a continuation of the Next Generation era – potentially titled Star Trek: Legacy – their ideal project. While Terry Matalas successfully brought nostalgia and closure to that era with Picard Season 3, viewers quickly expressed strong interest in a spinoff series focusing on Seven of Nine and the crew of the Enterprise-G. Currently, Matalas is working on Marvel’s VisionQuest, but Paramount’s new management seems to be aware of the significant fan demand for Legacy, offering a glimmer of hope for the future.
2. Star Trek: Year One – PITCHED

With Strange New Worlds nearing its conclusion, talk about a spin-off series focusing on Captain Kirk has become increasingly strong. Currently called Star Trek: Year One, the show would explore Paul Wesley’s portrayal of Kirk during his initial year as captain. Showrunner Henry Alonso Myers has confirmed he’s officially pitched the idea to Paramount+. The recent casting of Thomas Jane as a young “Bones” McCoy in the Strange New Worlds finale seems to be a test run for the concept, and many find it unusual to bring on an actor of Jane’s stature for just a few episodes. Myers says the decision is now with the studio, and fans are eagerly awaiting news.
1. Tawny Newsome’s Star Trek Comedy Series – IN DEVELOPMENT?

Tawny Newsome, known for her role as the host of Dax in Starfleet Academy and for working on the show’s overall direction, is a longtime fan of Star Trek. At Comic-Con 2024, she unexpectedly announced she’s developing a comedy series with Justin Simien set within the Star Trek universe. While the project hasn’t been officially approved and recent changes at Paramount might affect it, the basic idea is intriguing: the show would follow people who don’t normally belong in the Federation working at a luxury resort planet, unaware that their everyday lives are being televised across the galaxy.
Newsome’s big goal is to create a funny, live-action Star Trek series set 300 years in the future. She wants it to be a show where actors from any Trek series – both old and new – can appear as themselves.
As a longtime Trek fan, I’m really curious to hear what everyone’s most looking forward to in the future of Star Trek. Seriously, which project has you the most hyped? Let me know in the comments, and head over to the ComicBook Forum to really dive into the discussion with other fans!
