Approximately a year has passed since the release of “Star Wars Outlaws,” and its financial success fell short of expectations. The game didn’t meet its projected performance, joining other notable Ubisoft titles that have underperformed recently. There could be numerous explanations as to why “Outlaws” struggled to appeal to an audience, but Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO, directly points the finger at the Star Wars brand for the game’s lackluster sales. During a conference call with investors (through Gamereactor), he suggested that the release timing was unfavorable because “the brand it belonged to was facing some turbulent times.
It’s tough to pinpoint exactly what Guillemot might be alluding to when he mentions “choppy waters” in regards to Star Wars. Despite some struggles in reaching the usual massive audience for Star Wars content on Disney+, it’s worth noting that EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was a financial success a year prior. However, overlooking the somewhat divided reception towards Star Wars Outlaws is not entirely accurate. At launch, the game had numerous bugs and other problems that didn’t go unnoticed by players. ComicBook reviewer Hannah Adkins even gave it a 3.5 out of 5 last year, criticizing its “repetitive and uninspiring gameplay.

Another possible reason for the struggles of Star Wars Outlaws in finding an audience is that several recent Ubisoft games have faced similar challenges. For instance, last year’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown also didn’t perform as well as expected, despite receiving positive reviews. It’s been suggested that Ubisoft may be setting their expectations too high. However, some critics argue that these failures could be due to Ubisoft’s practice of heavily discounting their games shortly after release. This makes it difficult to persuade consumers to pay $69.99 when they know the game will likely be sold at a lower price ($39.99 or less) in just a few months.
It’s fortunate for Ubisoft that the game “Star Wars Outlaws” has a chance of reaching a new audience towards the end of this year. The title was initially announced for the Nintendo Switch 2 in April, and it is set to launch on September 4th. As the Nintendo Switch 2 is still relatively new (less than two months old), many publishers are already transferring games that weren’t originally compatible with the previous Nintendo system. Games like “Cyberpunk 2077” and the upcoming “Final Fantasy VII Remake” are prime examples. Here’s hoping Ubisoft manages to port the game successfully to Nintendo Switch 2, delivering an enjoyable gaming experience.
As a passionate Star Wars gamer, I’ve noticed that the galaxy far, far away feels a bit quieter these days. With only a handful of major shows and films on the horizon after the release of Andor Season 2 earlier this year, it’s understandable to attribute some of the challenges facing Star Wars Outlaws to this lull in content. However, Ubisoft might want to delve deeper into other potential factors that could be impacting their game.
