ARC Radiers Takes Steps to Address AI-Related Voice Acting, Embark Issues Statement

Embark Studios has addressed the debate around using AI-generated voices in their game, ARC Raiders. The issue even gained attention from Neil Newbon, known to many as the voice actor for Astarion, who also shared his thoughts.

Patrick Sƶderlund, leader of Embark Studios, explained to Games Industry that their voice actors are compensated not only for their recording time, but also for the ongoing use of their voice, even when they aren’t actively needed for the project.

We compensate our voice actors for all studio recording time and frequently work with them as we continue to update the game. Additionally, for certain applications, we pay them a fee to license their voices for text-to-speech generation, primarily for less critical audio like sounds for our ping system.

The studio has reportedly asked the original voice actors to re-record some lines, which will help reduce the amount of dialogue created using AI in the game. Sƶderlund also commented on this situation.

After the game came out, we went back and re-recorded some of the dialogue using actual voice actors. The sound quality is noticeably improved – professional actors simply deliver a better performance than AI-generated voices.

Honestly, I’m really glad to see the developers actually listening to us players and trying to fix things when we point out problems. It’s awesome, and it’s not the first time Embark has done this either. They seem genuinely committed to keeping the hype going for their extraction shooter, which is great! I’m hoping we see even more improvements and cool stuff in the future, especially with ARC Raiders.
