6 Ways Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 Surpasses the Anime & Manga

The latest season of Netflix’s One Piece demonstrates that live-action adaptations of anime and manga can be successful. It works because it respects the original story while also making smart improvements. This season follows the Straw Hat crew as they begin their journey into the Grand Line, moving the plot forward and introducing new backstory that will be important for future storylines.

The second season of Netflix’s One Piece builds on the story that already exists and cleverly brings in certain details sooner than the anime and manga. This allows the live-action series to expand on the world and set up future storylines in a way that the original versions haven’t yet. There are six particularly interesting instances where this season goes above and beyond what fans have seen in the anime and manga.

6) Bartolomeo’s Introduction

The first episode of One Piece Season 2 shows the Straw Hat crew exploring Loguetown before heading into the Grand Line. While walking around town, Luffy meets a tall man with green hair and a missing eyebrow who initially intends to rob him. But after seeing what Luffy does, the man is impressed and becomes a fan.

As a huge One Piece fan, I was really impressed with how the Netflix series handled Bartolomeo’s introduction in Season 2! It totally makes sense that they brought him into the story in Loguetown. In the anime and manga, he shows up much later, already established as a follower of Luffy. But by showing us why he becomes a fan right from the start – seeing Luffy’s reputation grow firsthand – it feels so much more natural. It really builds their connection and gives us a much better understanding of their dynamic. It’s a clever way to lay the groundwork for his character!

5) Gol D. Roger and Garp’s Conversation Before the Execution

The season’s first episode includes a scene with Gold Roger (later known as Gol D. Roger) talking to Monkey D. Garp. They share a close relationship, and Roger asks Garp to look after his son. This moment is particularly significant for fans of the manga and anime, as it isn’t revealed until much later in the original story.

Even this small detail lays groundwork for a major story arc that appears later on. During their talk, Roger also brings up God Valley and calls Garp the ‘Hero of God Valley,’ a crucial piece of information revealed much later in the story. Introducing it early like this is typical of the series’ strong use of foreshadowing.

4) Sabo’s Presence

The series’ first episode includes a mysterious rescue: Luffy is saved from Smoker by a man who is later identified as Dragon, the leader of the Revolutionary Army. Dragon observes the Straw Hat crew leaving Loguetown, and a shadowy figure with a large hat is seen standing near him.

Viewers who aren’t familiar with the original One Piece anime and manga might not recognize this character as anything more than a friend of Luffy’s. However, dedicated fans will know it’s Sabo, a character who becomes incredibly important later on. This clever, understated introduction is a great example of how the Netflix series is building on existing One Piece lore, sprinkling in subtle details that enrich the story and hint at future events.

3) Brook’s Early Introduction

The second episode focuses on Luffy discovering the story of Laboon, the whale that once swallowed the Going Merry and all the Straw Hat crew except for him. Through a flashback, we learn that the Rumbar Pirates used music to care for Laboon, and one member of the crew, other than their captain, plays a particularly important role in the story.

Viewers who only watch the live-action series might not know this character, but anime and manga fans will recognize him as the musician who later joins the Straw Hat crew. Showing him in this flashback helps explain his future connection to the crew and makes it feel more meaningful – a detail Netflix’s One Piece wisely expanded upon, and it works really well.

2) Luffy’s Dance Hides an Intriguing Detail

The latest episode includes a touching moment where Luffy comforts Laboon by singing “Bink’s Brew,” a song previously shared with him by the Rumbar Pirates. Interestingly, Luffy’s performance includes a dance move that hints at a key character and important backstory revealed much later in the series.

Luffy’s dancing is actually a hint about his future – it foreshadows his connection to the legendary Sun God Nika, who is known for bringing happiness and freedom. Even though Luffy doesn’t realize it at the time, his dance subtly shows that he’s destined to become Nika, a transformation he eventually undergoes. This suggests that the creators of the Netflix series understand how important this connection is and are cleverly highlighting it from the start.

1) Giants Mentioning the Sun God, Nika

Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 includes a reference to the Sun God Nika. During a battle between Dorry and Brogy, the characters express their worship of this god, even though this detail isn’t revealed until much later in the story’s manga and anime. The series eventually shows that the Sun God Nika has a long-standing connection to giants.

The show cleverly hints at Nika through its giants, enriching details that gain significance later on. This early connection makes the world feel more connected and allows the story’s history to unfold organically – a technique that would have benefited the original story with an earlier introduction.
