Netflix’s new sci-fi action movie, War Machine, is proving to be very popular. Starring Alan Ritchson, it’s a violent and fast-paced war film that’s a great watch for fans of Reacher while they wait for the next season, and it’s quickly climbing the streaming charts. Critics are generally positive about it too, with good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. If you enjoy War Machine, you might also like a similar, but often overlooked, sci-fi movie that’s currently available to stream for free on Tubi.
As a bit of a sci-fi and military movie fan, I finally got around to watching Battle: Los Angeles – it came out in 2011, and I’d always meant to check it out. It stars Aaron Eckhart as a Marine leader and Michelle Rodriguez, among others, and it’s basically about a sudden alien invasion of Los Angeles – and then the whole world, really. It wasn’t exactly a critical darling when it first came out, but it did pretty well in theaters. Now that it’s available to stream, I’m seeing more and more people discovering it and realizing it’s a really fun, action-packed movie – and I’m definitely one of them!
Battle: Los Angeles Received Brutal Reviews, But Is Really Good Sci-Fi Battle Fun
While not a classic of the alien invasion genre, Battle: Los Angeles faced surprisingly harsh criticism upon its release. Roger Ebert, for example, famously gave it a very low half-star rating and even suggested women dump dates who enjoyed the film! This negativity seems excessive, though. Though inspired by the real ‘Battle of Los Angeles’ incident from WWII – a rumored attack later attributed to a weather balloon and mass hysteria – the movie isn’t particularly weighty. It’s more of an action-packed, video game-like experience, blending military themes with an alien threat.
What makes Battle: Los Angeles work is its simple, direct approach. It’s a classic sci-fi war film focused on action, not deep themes or complicated explanations. You get plenty of explosions, battles, and a strong performance from Aaron Eckhart. It’s purely entertaining, especially if you enjoy that type of movie, and clearly, a lot of people do. Currently, Battle: Los Angeles remains a popular choice on Tubi, consistently ranking among the streamer’s top ten titles.
What Else is New on Tubi in March?
As a huge sci-fi fan, I was really happy to see what Tubi added this month! Besides Battle: Los Angeles, they’ve got a bunch of great titles. I’m especially excited about Ad Astra – it’s perfect if you’re counting down the days until Project Hail Mary like I am. They also added classics like Bicentennial Man, plus newer stuff like Chappie and Ex Machina. Definitely something for every sci-fi lover!
