Pixar has long been a key part of Disney’s success, and their newest film, Hoppers, is a recent example. It’s been the most popular movie in North America for the past two weekends. However, in Japan, Hoppers hasn’t been able to beat the popular anime series Doraemon, which is still number one after three weeks. While Doraemon hasn’t become a huge hit in Western countries, it remains incredibly popular with Japanese audiences.
The animated film Hoppers has earned over $165 million worldwide, but it didn’t perform as well in Japan during its opening weekend. It brought in $2.4 million, falling behind the latest Doraemon movie. Doraemon: Nobita and The New Castle of The Undersea Devil is currently in its third week in Japanese theaters and topped the charts last weekend, beating Hoppers. This is the forty-fifth film in the long-running Doraemon series, and a remake of a 1983 movie. While it’s not yet known if the new Doraemon film will come to North America, it’s proving very successful in Japan.
Doraemon’s Wild Ride

For the third weekend in a row, Doraemon was the most popular movie in Japan. Several other anime titles also made it into the top ten between March 13th and 15th. The live-action film Golden Kamuy: Abashiri Prison Arc debuted at number three. Cosmic Princess Kaguya held onto fifth place for its fourth week, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime The Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea came in at number ten during its third week of release. However, not all anime films performed well, as New Gintama the Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames didn’t make the top ten.
I’m a huge Doraemon fan, and I’m really bummed that the newest movie hasn’t come out in North America yet! We’re still waiting to see Doraemon’s latest adventure, but here’s what it’s all about: it takes place deep under the sea, a totally mysterious and exciting world! Nobita and his friends are trying to decide where to go camping for summer vacation, and Doraemon suggests… the middle of the ocean! They use Doraemon’s awesome gadgets – an Underwater Buggy and a Teki-O Light – to have an incredible underwater camping trip, meeting all sorts of amazing creatures. Then, they stumble upon a sunken ship and meet a mysterious young man named El. I can’t wait to see it!
Wow, did you hear that Doraemon is now doing better in theaters than the newest animated movie from Disney and Pixar? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
