7 A-List Actors Who Hid in Major Superhero Movies

Over the past fifty years, we’ve seen countless superhero movies from major studios like Marvel and DC, as well as smaller publishers. With so many films released, it’s not surprising that many now-famous actors appeared in small roles before becoming stars. We’re focusing on those actors who were either relatively unknown or had only a brief cameo in these films. This list excludes non-actors who made appearances, such as Michael Bay in Mystery Men, Elon Musk in Iron Man 2, and Richard Branson in Superman Returns.

We focused on casting major stars, so we left out recognizable faces like Doug Jones (who was in Mystery Men), Kane Hodder (who played Jason Voorhees and appeared in Daredevil), and Cara Buono from Stranger Things (who played Bruce Banner’s mother in Hulk). We also didn’t include Michelle Monaghan’s small role in Constantine because it’s debatable whether that film is a true superhero movie. The actors we did include were either just starting out, on their way to becoming famous, or already well-established stars making quick cameo appearances. It’s enjoyable to see them early in their careers, but you might not even remember they were in the film after you’ve seen it.

7) Sam Rockwell (& Skeet Ulrich) in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

In the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies from the 1990s, the villain Shredder recruits a group of teenage criminals to be his soldiers. The leader of this gang is played by Sam Rockwell, who later became famous for his roles in Iron Man 2 and Moon. This was actually only Rockwell’s second movie appearance, following his debut in the horror film Clownhouse.

You can also spot Skeet Ulrich (seen in the picture behind Rockwell) in a few of Rockwell’s scenes. This was six years before he became famous in movies like The Craft and Scream. While his time as a major star didn’t last, he appears to be enjoying a career revival, which is fantastic.

6) Jon Favreau in Batman Forever

Jon Favreau is a hugely influential director when it comes to superhero films. His work on the first Iron Man was critical to launching the Marvel Cinematic Universe – it’s hard to imagine the MCU existing as we know it without that film. Beyond his role as an executive producer on many Marvel movies, Favreau has continued to be part of the MCU, most recently appearing as Happy Hogan in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024.

Before directing Elf, Jon Favreau actually appeared as Franklin ‘Foggy’ Nelson in Daredevil that same year. Even earlier in his career, he had a small, non-speaking role in Batman Forever as an assistant to Ed Begley Jr.’s character. He was in the scene where they try to show Bruce Wayne their company’s work while dodging Jim Carrey’s chaotic Edward Nygma. This happened very early on – just a year after he played Eric the Clown on Seinfeld and a year before his breakthrough performance in Swingers.

5) Jenna Ortega in Iron Man 3

Now that Jenna Ortega is a huge star, many people have noticed this early role of hers. However, her very first movie appearance was a small, uncredited part as the Vice President’s daughter in Iron Man 3. Interestingly, she originally had lines in the film, but they were ultimately cut, as Ortega explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

In the same year, Ortega had a small, easily overlooked role in Insidious: Chapter 2, but she quickly landed more substantial parts. In 2014, she starred in The Little Rascals Save the Day and began playing young Jane Villanueva on Jane the Virgin. This led to work with Disney, and eventually, she became known as a leading horror actress – a “Scream Queen” for her generation – with roles in Wednesday, Scream, X, and other scary movies.

4) Patrick Wilson in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Patrick Wilson first gained attention in 2003 with HBO’s acclaimed Angels in America, and since then, he’s successfully moved between leading roles and memorable supporting parts. Whether he’s the star or not, he consistently stands out in films like The Conjuring and Insidious, as well as dramas such as Little Children and Young Adult. He also made a significant impact on superhero movies, notably as Nite Owl II in Watchmen.

His work led to a connection with Zack Snyder, who oversaw the DC Extended Universe. Snyder cast him as the voice of the President of the United States in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Wilson later became known for playing Orm Marius, the jealous brother of Aquaman, in Aquaman and its sequel. Carla Gugino, a fellow cast member from Watchmen, also appears as the voice of the AI Kelor, a role she originated in Man of Steel and continued in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Batman v Superman featured a surprising number of Watchmen alumni, including Billy Crudup and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who both had smaller roles.

3) Ella Purnell in Kick-Ass 2

I always found it interesting how Kick-Ass 2 really delved into Mindy Macready, played by Chloë Grace Moretz, and her attempts to just be a normal high school student. It wasn’t easy for her, though – she had a particularly nasty bully named Brooke who made things incredibly difficult.

Ella Purnell, who will soon be starring in the next Fallout series, plays a key role similar to Amanda Seyfried’s in Mean Girls, alongside a lead actress playing a character like Rachel McAdams’. Benedict Wong, known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, makes a brief appearance as Mr. Kim, a gangster who clashes with the heroes Kick-Ass, Colonel Stars and Stripes, and the rest of the Justice Forever team.

2) Octavia Spencer in Spider-Man

Many talented actors, including Octavia Spencer, spend years working in the industry before achieving widespread recognition. For Spencer, that breakthrough came with the film The Help. Before that, she often played smaller roles designed to advance the story, rather than showcase her acting abilities.

She appeared in a variety of films, ranging from less successful ones like What Planet Are You From? and Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, to critically acclaimed movies such as Being John Malkovich, Bad Santa, and the first Spider-Man directed by Sam Raimi. In Spider-Man, she played the “Check-In Girl” – the first person Peter Parker speaks to before his wrestling match.

1) Jim Broadbent in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

Jim Broadbent, known for his roles in popular films and series like Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, Paddington, and Game of Thrones, started his film career with a small part in the not-very-well-received Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. In the movie, he plays Jean Pierre Dubois, a businessman attempting to win Lex Luthor’s favor.

I always get a kick out of spotting familiar faces in older films! It’s fun to remember that Broadbent worked with William Hootkins, who a lot of us know as Jek Porkins from the original Star Wars. Hootkins actually had a more substantial role a couple of years later as the poor Lt. Eckhardt in Batman. And of course, Broadbent himself went on to have a really successful career after The Quest for Peace.
