The planned revival of Hulu’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been canceled, according to Sarah Michelle Gellar. The new series, titled Buffy: New Sunnydale, would have featured Gellar alongside Ryan Keira Armstrong as a new Slayer, set years after the original show ended. It would have followed the familiar story of a new hero taking up the mantle, which fits perfectly with the Buffy universe, since the original series established that each generation gets its own Slayer.
Rumors of problems with the show had been circulating for a while, but despite that, a pilot episode was completed. Then, unexpectedly, Hulu cancelled the series. The timing was particularly jarring: Sarah Michelle Gellar learned about the cancellation while promoting Ready or Not 2 at SXSW, and showrunner Chloé Zhao was at the Oscars, nominated for Best Picture. Now, there are two conflicting explanations for why the show was suddenly dropped.
Sarah Michelle Gellar Believes There’s a Reason the Buffy Revival Was Cancelled
Sarah Michelle Gellar has been open about how upsetting the show’s cancellation was. She speaks highly of both the creator and her co-star, Ryan Keira Armstrong, calling Armstrong a “superstar.” Gellar was initially drawn to the show because she believed in the creator’s vision, making the cancellation especially difficult for her. She explained that one executive was responsible, admitting he wasn’t a fan of the original series, hadn’t watched it, and didn’t hesitate to let everyone know.
Sarah Michelle Gellar explained that revisiting a show as popular as Buffy the Vampire Slayer was incredibly challenging, both for fans and for herself and Joss Whedon. She said they faced an uphill battle from the start, especially since the executive in charge openly admitted he’d never even watched the original series. Reports from Variety and Deadline identify this executive as Craig Erwich, who recently received a promotion overseeing Hulu Originals, 20th Television, and Searchlight TV.
The Buffy Revival Had Serious Problems
It’s true that the planned Buffy revival faced some real issues. The first draft of the pilot episode was often criticized for feeling too childish and having a limited scope. A copy of this early script has reportedly leaked, and while its authenticity is hard to confirm, industry publications are treating it as genuine. The script focuses on a new Slayer and her friends dealing with a resurgence of vampires in Sunnydale, with Sarah Michelle Gellar only appearing briefly at the end to set up the larger story.
We’ve reviewed the script, and while it has flaws, the overall story is clear. A key element is a mysterious company funding the rebuilding of Sunnydale, and it’s likely connected to Buffy Summers’ current, unnamed employer. The story centers on a new hero, Nova, who’s unexpectedly thrust into the role of a Slayer, completely unaware of the supernatural world. By the end of the script, she’s still learning the ropes and doesn’t have a Watcher, though she does have access to research materials similar to Giles’ library.
Despite earlier issues with the initial script – which was just a first attempt and temporarily called the Slayer “Nova” (a very obvious placeholder, as it simply means “new” in Latin) – a revised version was created. According to Deadline, this new script was more mature, featured a stronger role for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy, and felt better suited for a streaming platform than traditional television. Deadline reports that both 20th Television and Searchlight Television responded positively to the changes, increasing confidence that the show would move forward. Ultimately, the Slayer was named “Rowan” in the final script.
According to Variety, issues arose during the filming of the pilot episode. Two sources say that director Zhao’s style didn’t quite fit the needs of Buffy: New Sunnydale, which needed more detailed explanations than she typically uses. These sources specifically mention that the introduction of the new characters felt rushed, and point to the new Slayer, Armstrong, as a particular example. Her young age – she turned 16 on March 10th – reportedly made the show feel too immature.
The Core Problem With the Buffy Revival is Gradually Becoming Clear

There are two different explanations emerging about why the new Buffy project didn’t work out. Sarah Michelle Gellar thinks the studio didn’t grasp the show’s core ideas or support the creator’s plans. However, studio sources, speaking anonymously, suggest the project itself had problems and didn’t appeal to a broad enough audience. These two sides appear to have completely opposing views.
It seems the main reason the show didn’t work out is that those involved had very different visions. Zhao and other creative leaders wanted to focus on a new generation of slayers, which is why the early scripts centered on the character of Nova and her friends, and why they cast Armstrong. However, the studio executives apparently wanted a continuation of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer – a more mature show following Buffy’s ongoing adventures. This fundamental disagreement ultimately led to problems.
The recent developments felt unavoidable, and will likely have a significant, long-term impact on the future of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If this is how things stand, it suggests Sarah Michelle Gellar isn’t interested in reviving the show unless it aligns with her vision. She’s consistently stated she wouldn’t return to the role, and now it seems highly unlikely she’ll change her mind. Sadly, this appears to be the definitive end to the story of the Slayers.
